COLLEGE PARK, Md. -
Second-ranked Maryland field hockey plays a pair of home contests this weekend, beginning with an ACC clash versus Virginia on Saturday, Oct. 1 at 1 p.m. The Terps close out the weekend and a four-game homestand against Rutgers on Sunday, Oct. 2 at 1 p.m. There will be a $10 parking charge for Saturday's game because of the Terps' football home contest which is slated for a noon start.
After suffering its first loss of the season last weekend to Wake Forest in penalty strokes, Maryland (10-1, 1-1 ACC) looks to get back to its winning ways. The Terps lead Virginia (5-4, 0-1 ACC) the all-time series, 27-19-2, winning nine of the last 10 meetings.
Making a return to the Field Hockey & Lacrosse Complex is senior Lauren Powley (Mountaintop, Pa.). Powley missed the last five-straight games playing at the Junior World Cup in Santiago, Chile, with the U.S. Junior National team. She helped the Americans to their best-ever finish, placing seventh overall.
In the midst of a four-game home stretch, Maryland boasts the sixth-best defense in the nation, limiting opponents to 10 goals on the season while recording four shutouts on the year. Its offense is also among the top 15 in the nation.
Leading the way for the Terps is senior Tiffany Marsh (Marathon, N.Y.). She leads the team with 28 points, which is the second-most by a player in the nation. Her nine goals ties with classmate Jackie Ciconte (Wilmington, Del.) for the most on the team and sixth-most in the country. Marsh's 10 assists ties for the nation's lead and is a career high with just under half the regular season still remaining.
In the cage, junior Christina Restivo (Parkton, Md.) and sophomore Kathryn Masson (Richmond, British Columbia) have split the goaltending duties. Restivo's 1.30 goals against average ranks in the top 15 nationally. Masson has recorded three of the team's shutouts and her 0.60 shutouts-per-game average is the best in the ACC.
The Cavaliers are looking for their first conference win of the season having lost a 1-0 decision to ACC newcomer Boston College last weekend. They are coming off a 3-1 victory over Longwood. Senior Katie Phillips leads the team with 10 goals.
It will also be a homecoming for Virginia head coach Jessica Wilks. A 1990 graduate of Maryland, she is going to be inducted into the University of Maryland's Athletic Hall of Fame on Friday night. Wilk was a member of the ACC's 50th Anniversary teams in field hockey and lacrosse. She was a three-time All-American field hockey player from 1986-1988 and earned All-American honors in lacrosse in 1990.
All Maryland field hockey games are played at the Field Hockey & Lacrosse Complex. Admission is free. A $10 parking fee will only affect Saturday's game vs. the Cavaliers.
