GREENSBORO, N.C. - Junior All-American Paula Infante scored three goals on the week to lead the Maryland field hockey team to a 4-0 record, including a pair of wins over teams that were ranked in the national top 15 at the conclusion of the 2004 season.
Against Michigan on Friday in the Terrapins' home opener, Infante, a midfield/back, scored twice off a pair of penalty corners in Maryland's 4-0 win. Infante's goals put Maryland comfortably ahead at 3-0, while her defense also contributed to the shutout. The Wolverines were ranked fifth in the final STX/NFHCA Poll of 2004.
The Santiago, Chile, native scored the game-winning goal against perennial power Old Dominion on Sunday, intercepting a ball from the Monarchs and scoring the golden goal on a breakaway with 22 seconds left in overtime to lift Maryland to a 2-1 road win. ODU was ranked 12th at the end of 2004.
Maryland (5-0) also topped Ohio State on Monday, 2-1, and Ohio on Tuesday, 3-1. Infante was part of a defense that limited Ohio State to just three shots and Ohio to just two shots and no penalty corners.
The Terrapins return to action on Tuesday, Sept. 6 when they host the University of Durham from England in an exhibition match. Next weekend, the Terps host American, California and Stanford for the annual Terrapin Invitational, Sept. 10-11.
