
Yow to Enter N.C. Sports Hall of Fame

COLLEGE PARK, Md. - Deborah A. Yow, the director of athletics at the University of Maryland, will be among 10 inductees into the North Carolina Sports Hall of Fame on May 11, it was announced yesterday by Bobby Vaughan, the president of the Hall.
Members of the Hall include Coach Dean Smith, David Thompson, former Washington Redskin Sonny Jurgensen, Charlie "Choo Choo" Justice, Richard Petty, Arnold Palmer and former Terrapin center Buck Williams.
Yow, who for 12 years has served as the director of athletics at Maryland, is a native of Gibsonville, N.C. During her tenure at the university, Terrapin teams have won 11 national championships, balanced 11 straight athletics budgets and significantly increased resources for academic services and facilities.
"It is very special to be selected for induction into this Hall of Fame," said Yow. "It's a blessing and I'm very appreciative to be honored by my home state."
"This is well-deserved recognition for Debbie," said Dr. C.D. Mote Jr., president of the University of Maryland. "As an exemplary player, a coach and now a successful director of athletics, Debbie Yow has brought distinction to every endeavor in which she participates. The University of Maryland has benefited significantly from her outstanding leadership."
The 43rd annual induction ceremony will be held at the North Raleigh Hilton in Raleigh, N.C. Tickets for the ceremony are $94 each or $750 for a table of eight. Banquet ticket information is available from the Hall at 919-852-4396 or at the Hall's web site at www.ncshof.org.
The North Carolina Sports Hall of Fame, with 233 members, was established in 1963 and is housed in the N.C. Museum of History in Raleigh. The 4,000-square foot exhibit includes sports memorabilia ranging from a Richard Petty race car to the Homestead Grays uniform worn by the late Walter "Buck" Leonard, who played baseball in the Negro National League, to the NBA Championship Ring of former Boston Celtics star Cedric "Cornbread" Maxwell.
The museum is open Tuesday through Saturday from 9 a.m. until 5 p.m. and on Sunday from noon until 5 p.m. Admission to the museum is free.
