Terp Volleyball Travels To Tobacco Road For Four-Match Road Swing

COLLEGE PARK, Md. - Maryland volleyball travels to tobacco road for a four-game road swing beginning with a matchup against Duke Thursday at 7 p.m. The Terps (1-6 ACC, 8-8) look to improve their position in the conference against the first-place Blue Devils (7-0 ACC, 14-2), followed by a Friday night contest with Wake Forest (5-2 ACC, 9-7) at 7 p.m.

A Look at the Terps

As the Terrapins start the second half of the season, the team's defense continues to dominate registering 187.5 blocks (3.12 bpg) for third-best in the ACC and No. 20 in the NCAA. The Terps hold a .192 hitting percentage (12.97 kpg), average 11.98 assists per game and register 12.72 digs per game.

Freshman Katie Usher is third in the ACC and leads the Terps with 82 blocks (1.39 bpg), as redshirt freshman Meredith Doyle posts 61 blocks (1.39) and a .235 hitting percentage (1.67 kpg) as she recuperates from an injury.

Junior outside Jade Brown (.233) leads the Terrapins holding the team-best of 211 kills (3.91 kpg) and 166 digs (3.07 dpg). Brown also has 36 blocks, 11 solo this season. Mary Beth Brown (.191) has collected 2.22 kpg and 61 blocks, while junior Beth Gillming (2.02 kpg) has 121 kills and 155 digs (2.58 dpg). Sophomore Maggie Schmelzle, at libero for three games this season, holds the second-highest number of digs with 158 (2.63 dpg).

Setter Teryn Papp (5.50 a/g) has 264 assists for the team, while Tedi Doucet has registered 279 (4.73) in her sophomore campaign.

Last Week

The Terrapins notched their first ACC win in a five-game match with Georgia Tech last weekend (16-30, 30-23, 22-30, 30-26, 15-13), followed by a 3-0 loss to Clemson (30-32, 25-30, 22-30).

In the match against the Yellow Jackets (Oct. 6), Jade Brown registered a .347 hitting percentage with 23 kills and 13 digs. Gillming tallied 15 kills and 12 digs for her second double-double of the season, as Schmelzle led the team with 15 digs, her sixth game of the season with double-digit digs.

The Terrapins were not able to carry over the momentum from the Georgia Tech win as they fell 3-0 to Clemson (Oct. 8). Jade Brown led all players with 18 kills, marking her twelfth match in 14 that she has been in double-figures in that category. She also collected 14 digs and two blocks bringing her total to 10 double-doubles this season.

The Terps received votes in the CSTV/AVCA Top 25 Division I Coaches Poll for four weeks earlier this season.

Scouting the Blue Devils

Duke remains undefeated in the conference at 7-0 with a 14-2 overall record. The Blue Devils lead the ACC in assists (15.65 a/g), kills (16.81 kpg) and digs (19.37 dpg). Duke holds a .243 hitting percentage and has won seven consecutive matches, with the two season's losses coming against then No.2 Penn State (3-0) and to Notre Dame (3-1).

Junior Carrie DeMange (.273) leads Duke with a 4.11 kpg, as freshman Rachel Moss (.248) averages 3.76 kills per game. DeMange and Ross are second and fifth in the ACC in kills, respectively.

Ali Hausfeld leads the conference with 13.02 assists per game, while Jourdan Norman averages 1.30 blocks per game helping the team to a 2.73 average.

The Blue Devils are coming off a five-game win Tuesday night over Wake Forest (30-17, 30-26, 3013). Junior Ali Hausfeld paced the Duke offense with 42 assists, while DeMange and senior Tealle Hunkus combined for 27 kills. Freshman Rachel Moss added 11 kills in the game and was named ACC Player of the Week last week.

Last season, Maryland split contests with Duke with match scores of 3-0 in College Park (31-29, 31-29, 30-18), dropping a contest in Cameron Indoor Stadium 3-0 (25-30, 20-30, 19-30).

The Terrapins have won six of the last eight meetings, while the Blue Devils hold the overall series lead, 24-29.

A Look at the Demon Deacons

Wake Forest (5-2 ACC, 9-7) enters the weekend after a mid-week loss to the Blue Devils on Tuesday in Winston-Salem, N.C., breaking its four-game winning streak. Collectively, the Demon Deacons hold a .187 hitting percentage, with Jessica Furlong (.145) leading the squad with a 3.43 kill per game average. Dylan Faulkner has 11.02 assists per game, helping the team to a 12.53 average.

Defensively, the Demon Deacons average 14.18 digs, while Natasha Schaefer holds the team-best 3.50 dpg. Wake Forest (2.15 bpg) is led by Natalie Mullikin with 64 blocks (1.07 bpg) and Jackie Lucas with 52 blocks (0.87 bpg).

The Terps split matches with the Demon Deacons last season, claiming a five-game win on Oct. 14, 2006 (30-28, 28-30, 30-21, 26-30, 15-12), then falling 3-2 in Winston-Salem on Nov. 12, 2006 (22-30, 30-23, 32-30, 25-30, 11-15).

The Terps hold a 20-9 series lead over the Deacs, with the Terps winning five of the last seven meetings.
