
Terps Place Fifth at Pelican Invitational

FORT MYERS, Fla. - Kelly Calkin tied for the best round of the day with a 3-under-par 69 Tuesday to tie for fifth individually and lead the University of Maryland to a fifth-place finish at the Georgia State University/Pelican Preserve Invitational women's golf tournament.
Calkin finished with a 54-hole total of 220 to lead the Terrapins. Jessica Reno also earned a top-20 finish by tying for 12th after her final-round 75 gave her a 221 total for the tournament.
As a team, Maryland shot 293 on the final day to place fifth at 889. Maryland was two shots behind USF in the final standings. Texas Tech finished with a 294 on Tuesday but won the tournament with an 879 total, taking advantage of a 293 in the first round.
Also for Maryland, Katie Stepanek tied for 35th at 227, Katie Trotter had a 73 on Tuesday en route to a 228 total and a tie for 38th, while Kelly MacWhinnie also finished at 228 for the tournament.
Jessica Steward of Miami won the medalist honor, using her rounds of 69 and 68 on Monday to post a 209 total. She won the event by eight shots over Gloriana Soto of Texas Tech and Karla Murra of Iowa.
Maryland plays next at the Lady Pirate Invitational on Oct. 21 and 22 in Greenville, N.C.
