Both Terp opponents this weekend seek to gain some ground in the ACC, as Maryland returns to North Carolina for the second straight week to finish a four-match road swing in the tobacco state. The Terps (8-10, 1-8 ACC) face off against the Tarheels (4-14, 2-7 ACC) on Friday at 7 p.m., then against the Wolfpack of NC State (2-16, 0-9 ACC) on Saturday at 6 p.m.

A Look at the Terps
The Terps are registering a .184 hitting percentage (12.66 kpg) with junior outside hitter Jade Brown (.204) leading the squad with a 3.79 kpg average. Redshirt sophomore Mary Beth Brown (.185) holds a 2.17 kpg and has collected 62 blocks (0.97 bpg) this season. Junior Beth Gillming and freshman middle-blocker Katie Usher have combined for 220 kills, while redshirt freshman Kathleen Wilson holds a .269 hitting percentage.
Teryn Papp leads the team with 5.30 assists, while sophomore setter Tedi Doucet has 4.66 assists.
Ranked fourth in the ACC in the blocking category, Maryland averages 3.11 bpg, with over 211 total blocks. Usher is third in the ACC with 1.43 bpg, while middle-blocker Meredith Doyle (1.33 bpg) has recorded 61 blocks and has missed about a third of the season to recuperate from an injury.
Sophomore Maggie Schmelzle has recorded 194 digs (2.85) for the squad this season, as she settles in the libero position. Jade Brown (2.94 dpg) and Beth Gillming (2.63 dpg) have helped the Terps to 12.96 dpg on the season.
Jade Brown is sixth overall and in the league (3.88 kpg) in kills per game, while Schmelzle moved to tenth in the ACC in digs (3.59).
Last Time Out
Maryland traveled to tobacco road for the first pair of four-consecutive matches in North Carolina as it faced first-place Duke (Oct. 12) and Wake Forest (Oct. 13). The Terps weren't able to hand the Blue Devils (9-0 ACC, 16-2) their first ACC loss of the season as they were swept, 3-0, in Cameron Indoor Stadium (21-30, 20-30, 21-30).
Duke notched fewer blocks in the match (6-4.5), yet the Terrapins were held to 29 kills. Jade Brown posted her 11th double-double of the season with 10 kills and 11 digs. Schmelzle led all players with 23 digs, while Usher had five total blocks in the contest.
The following night, Maryland charged to a 2-1 game lead against Wake Forest in Winston-Salem, but fell 3-2 (30-25, 29-31, 30-26, 19-30, 10-15) in its first five-game loss of the season.
It was the thirteenth match that the Terrapins outblocked its opponent as the Terps had 17 to the Deacs' 12. Usher swatted nine blocks on the night, while both teams notched 59 digs in the match. Jade Brown and Kathleen Wilson recorded double-figure kills in the match.
Building Blocks
The Terps are ranked No. 20 in the NCAA for team blocks (3.11 bpg) and are fourth in the ACC, behind Clemson at 3.33 bpg. Maryland and Clemson are the only two ACC teams that have two players in the top ten in blocks this season.
The Terps set a new school-record of 22 total blocks in the 3-1 win over Long Island University, in the Hilton Garden Inn Greenbelt Invitational in College Park (Sept. 15).
Usher is third in the league with 96 total blocks, with Doyle's 75 blocks holding for fifth overall. The Terps (3.11 bpg) are second behind Clemson (3.33) in the league in blocks.
Four Terrapins have notched 40 or more blocks to date this season. Aside from Usher (96) and Doyle (61), outside hitters Mary Beth Brown (62), Jade Brown (40), and Beth Gillming (37) have helped the Terps' defense.
About the Tarheels
North Carolina was swept by Georgia Tech (15-30, 27-30, 28-30) and Clemson (27-30, 27-30, 35-37) last weekend (Oct. 13-14). The Tarheels' (2-7 ACC, 4-14) two ACC wins this season have come over NC State (Sept. 15) and Miami (Oct. 8).
North Carolina and Maryland are one of two ACC teams that faced top 25 opponents earlier in the season. The Tarheels were swept by then-No. 24 Utah and then-No. 11 Tennessee.
Noelle Dyk (3.32 kpg) and Bekah Brinkley lead the Tarheel offense with 176 and 99 kills, respectively. Amy Beaver (.268) has 156 kills for a 2.60 kpg, helping the team (13.55 kpg) to a .141 hitting percentage.
Stephanie Jansma has 11.12 assists, while the team holds a 12.47 a/g.
On defense, Brianna Eskola has 4.83 dpg for the Wolfpack and is fourth in the ACC. Stephanie Jansma added holds a 2.68 dpg, as the team holds a 17.0 dpg average. North Carolina has 2.45 bpg on the year, with Beaver leading the team with 69 blocks (1.15 bpg).
Dyk had 18 kills against Clemson, while she and Beaver each notched 11 kills in the contest with the Yellow Jackets.
Last season, the Terps won their first meeting over UNC 3-1, and lost the season-finale 3-0, as the teams ended the season as 2005 ACC Co-Champions.
Maryland is 20-29 all-time against North Carolina, with three wins in the last five matches. The Terrapins have not won in Carmichael Stadium since 1997.
About NC State
After a Friday contest against Boston College, the Wolfpack will face the Terrapins for a Saturday 6 p.m. meeting on their home turf of Reynolds Coliseum. NC State (0-9 ACC, 2-16 ACC) posted wins over UT-Chattanooga (Sept. 2) and Chicago State (Sept. 8) earlier this season.
The Wolfpack return home after four straight matches on the road where they won only one game.
The Wolfpack is led by Keshia Raibon (2.97 kpg) and Chrissy Zirpolo (2.74 kpg), while Aiwane Iboaya has a .311 hitting percentage after 91 kills. Allison Davis is the team's primary setter with 9.20 assists per game.
The red and white hold a .115 hitting percentage (12.08 kpg) and averages 13.82 digs per game. Kelley Blakewood (2.30 dpg) and Davis (2.15 dpg) lead NC State in digs.
NC State holds a 2.03 bpg average, with Iboaya tallying 52 blocks (0.95 bpg), while Davis has added 46 blocks (0.78).
Maryland has won 10 of the last 11 meetings and hold a 34-17 series advantage.
Last season, the Terrapins won both matchups 3-1 over NC State.
Coming Up
After the contests against North Carolina (Oct. 20) at 7 p.m., and NC State (Oct. 21) at 6 p.m, the Terps return to College Park for contests against Miami (Oct. 28) and Florida State (Oct. 29).
The Terrapins then head to Virginia (Nov. 3) and Virginia Tech (Nov. 4) to start the second half of their ACC schedule.
