After its ACC home-openers this weekend, Maryland volleyball looks to get back in the win column as it travels to Boston for its first mid-week, ACC matchup with Boston College. The Terps (7-6, 0-4 ACC) face the Eagles (4-9, 2-2 ACC) Tuesday at 6 p.m.
Noting the Terrapins
Jade Brown continues to lead the Terps, recording 3.65 kills per game (.229 hitting percentage), and 3.02 digs per game (130 digs). Mary Beth Brown (.215) and middle blocker Meredith Doyle (.247) have combined for 157 kills, with the Terps holding a .190 hitting percentage overall.
Senior setter Teryn Papp (5.59 a/g) has 246 assists for the team, while Tedi Doucet has registered 235 (480).
On defense, junior outside hitter Beth Gillming has tallied 125 digs (2.55 dpg), while sophomore Maggie Schmelzle (.220) has collected 118 kills and is second on the team with 81 digs (2.25 dpg).
Building Blocks
The Terps' block, ranked first in the ACC at 3.15 bpg, is led by freshman Katie Usher with 65 total blocks (1.35 bpg) and Meredith Doyle who has recorded 56 blocks (1.37 bpg). Doyle and Usher are ranked third and fourth in the ACC, respectively. Mary Beth Brown has added 49 total blocks for the Terps (1.08 bpg).
About Last Weekend
The Terps hosted Virginia Tech and Virginia in their ACC home-opening contests in College Park (Sept. 29-30). Maryland dropped the first matchup of the weekend against the Hokies 3-1, (24-30, 30-22, 24-30, 24-30), and fell in the contest with Virginia 3-0 (27-30, 32-34, 21-30) on Saturday.
Jade Brown posted her eighth double-double in ten matches Friday night against Virginia Tech. Gillming notched 14 digs for the Terps, while Maryland was tied with the Hokies with 12 blocks.
Virginia outlasted Maryland in the Saturday meeting, as the Terps fell 3-0 (27-30, 32-34, 21-30). Mary Beth Brown led the Terrapins in the match against Virginia Tech, recording 11 kills and four blocks, while Usher had six blocks for the squad.
Scouting Boston College
At 4-9 (2-2 ACC), the Eagles started the season with five losses, then won five of their next ten games. Boston College opened ACC play with a five-game win over Miami (Sept. 22), followed by losses to Florida State, 3-1 (Sept. 24) and 3-1, Virginia (Sept. 28).
The Eagles are coming off a five-game win over Virginia Tech (21-30, 30-26, 21-30, 30-25, 15-12) in Power Gym on Saturday, Oct. 1. Senior libero Allison Anderson notched 27 digs and outside hitter Kelsey Johnson had 14 kills in the win for the Eagles.
Collectively, Boston College has a .185 hitting percentage and averages 12.08 assists per game. Johnson (.214) averages 3.92 kills per game, while six-one Abigail Hasebroock (.236) has contributed 61 kills (2.03 kpg). Sophomore setter Brittany Pierpont has 9.49 assists for the squad, with Kristin Kenny adding 111 assists (5.29 a/g).
On defense, Anderson holds the team-best of 4.76 digs per game, helping the team to a 15.06 average. Shardai Davis (0.80 bpg) has 39 blocks, while the team holds a 2.31 bpg.
Last season, Maryland won both contests against BC. On Sept. 20, the Terps won in four games after dropping the first (30-32, 30-11, 35-33, 30-21), then swept the Eagles in College Park on Oct. 18 (30-27, 30-16, 30-28).
Head coach Andrea Leonard (Northern Michigan '93) enters her fourth season with Boston College. Overall, the Terrapins lead the series 3-0.
Maryland returns to the Comcast Center this weekend for a Friday match against Georgia Tech at 7 p.m., followed by a Sunday contest with Clemson at 1 p.m.
