COLLEGE PARK, Md. - Maryland Madness will officially kick off the basketball season on Friday, October 13 at Comcast Center. The popular event will feature the first intrasquad scrimmages for the men's and women's basketball squads.
Fans are invited to join coaches Gary Williams and Brenda Frese and the "Voice of the Terps" Johnny Holliday, as Maryland ushers in the season with a night of giveaways, special performances, a laser-light show and surprises.
"Maryland Madness is always one of the highlights for this team," said Williams. "We're going to give fans a great show."
"Maryland Madness is the perfect event to launch the basketball season," added Frese. "This will be the first public appearance of our entire defending National Championship team, so I'm looking forward to another great moment."
The festivities tip off at 8:00 p.m. and feature the annual men's basketball alumni game, performances by the Maryland Gymkana Troupe, the Terrapin Spirit Squad, the defending National Champion varsity competitive cheer team, the Maryland Dance Team and Maryland Band. After the lights go down and the teams are introduced, the men's and women's squads will hold their first Red/White scrimmages of the year.
Free Maryland Madness T-shirts will be given to the first 5,000 students in attendance.
Tickets for Maryland Madness are free, but must be reserved by calling the Terrapin Ticket Office at 1-800-IM-A-TERP. They may be picked up between 8:30 a.m. and 4:30 p.m. daily.
Once again, the Student Athlete Advisory Committee (SAAC) will be sponsoring a canned food drive for the Capital Area Food Bank in Washington, D.C. The event will be held on Friday, October 13th in conjunction with Maryland Madness. Student Athletes will be at the four entrance gates collecting canned food donations. Our hope is to get this information out to patrons planning to attend this event in hopes to remind them to bring their canned food donations for the Capital Food Bank.
