TALLAHASSEE, Fla. - Junior midfielder Maurice Edu was placed on the College Soccer News National Team of the Week, announced today. Edu scored both of the Terps' goals last week in wins against Loyola and No. 14 Duke and both proved to be game-winners. They were his first two goals of the season.
Edu, a native of Fontana, Calif., scored both goals in very similar fashion. Against Loyola on Tuesday night, sophomore Graham Zusi took the ball down the right side of the pitch. He fired a cross to the far side of the box to an awaiting Drew Yates. Yates took the cross on his head and redirected the pass to the middle of the box. Edu, who was making a run down the center of the box, knocked home a header to the right side of the net to give the Terps a 1-0 edge in the 61st minute.
Against the Blue Devils on Friday night, Edu notched the game-winner in the 14th minute in front of a record crowd and a national audience on Fox Soccer Channel. After freshman Jeremy Hall forced a corner kick, Zusi stepped to the ball and delivered a beautiful pass to the middle of the box. Edu was able to get a head on the ball and put a shot past the Duke keeper for the win.
A record crowd of 6,489 fans showed up to Ludwig Field to support the Terps in their 1-0 triumph against the Blue Devils. That topped the old program record of 6,203 fans that watched Maryland take on Indiana last season.
The Terps head to the road for their next two matches before coming home to end the regular season with five-consecutive home games. On Friday, Maryland travels to No. 8 North Carolina for another match that will be televised on Fox Soccer Channel. Then the Terps will face No. 5 Virginia in Charlottesville on Wednesday, October 11.
