GREENVILLE, N.C. - Kelly MacWhinnie finished in a tie for fourth individually, while Katie Stepanek fired a 3-under-par 69 Sunday that led the University of Maryland to a second-place finish in the team standings a the Lady Pirate Invitational women's golf tournament hosted by East Carolina University.
MacWhinnie, a senior from Pittsburgh, Pa., led the Terrapins individually in a tournament for the first time in the fall season with her finish. She carded three straight 73s for a 219 total that tied her for fourth, just three strokes away from first place.
Stepanek's final-round 69 gave her a 229 total for the tournament and a tie for 29th individually. More important, she led the Terrapins to a 292 final-round score as a team, which moved them up one place to second in the team standings.
Maryland, which began the day in a tie for third, finished at 885 over the 54-hole event, five shots behind Birmingham Southern, which used a 289 to win the event at 880. Second-round leader Augusta State carded a 300 on Sunday to place third at 887.
Also for Maryland, Kelly Calkin tied for 10th at 221 after a final-round 72, with Katie Trotter tying for 14th individually at 222. Jessica Reno tied for 60th with a 233 total.
Laura Jansone of East Tennessee State and Sara Hunt of Birmingham Southern tied for the individual title at 216. Ashley Davis of Old Dominion was third at 218.
