University of Maryland President Dr. C.D. Mote and Director of Athletics Dr. Deborah Yow recognized the 2005-2006 scholar-athletes at a special half-time ceremony at the Maryland-FIU football game at Chevy Chase Bank Field at Byrd Stadium on September 23, 2006. A total of 393 scholar-athletes were honored for achieving a GPA of 3.0 or higher during the 2005-2006 academic year, marking an 11 percent increase over the previous academic year.
Anton Goff, Associate Athletic Director for Academic Support and Career Development; Dr. James Harris, Dean of the College of Arts and Sciences; Dr. William Destler, Senior Vice President for Academic Affairs and Provost; and Dr. Charles Wellford, Criminology and Criminal Justice Professor were also on hand for the recognition before 45,317 fans at the game.
"We are pleased to recognize these athletes and would like to thank the many tutors who have made an outstanding contribution to the academic success of our program" said Goff. "We would also like to thank the Terrapin Club for their ongoing contribution and support. Through their generosity we are able to enhance the educational experiences of our scholar-athletes and build our Maryland family."
