Junior outside hitter Beth Gillming recorded her 1,000th career dig tonight, as the Terps swept the Hurricanes 3-0 (30-24, 30-24, 30-27) at the Comcast Center marking their second three-game win of the season. Maryland improves to 10-11 (3-9 ACC), while Miami drops to 8-14 (5-8 ACC).
"The entire team gave a real fighting effort and I'm so pleased with their defensive pursuit,"said head coach Janice Kruger. "I was very happy with their overall performance. They really worked hard as a team."
Gillming's 12 digs on the night brings her career total to 1,009, moving her to No. 5 on Maryland's all-time career record list.
Current Miami head coach and former Terrapin Nicole Latagne-Welch (`94) is ranked first all-time at Maryland in career digs.
The Terrapins posted a .233 hitting percentage in the match, and kept the Hurricanes to .113, while also outblocking Miami, 10-8. Jade Brown (.419) led all players with 16 kills, while Gillming downed eight kills and Aramburu had six.
Usher held the match-high of five blocks, while Mary Beth Brown finished the match with five kills and three blocks.
Sophomore Maggie Schmelzle posted the match-high of 18 digs, as Gillming notched 12. Teryn Papp and Tedi Doucet combined for 34 assists.
The Terps came out determined in the first game as they opened with a 7-1 lead with kills from Ashley Hogan, Brown and Aramburu. After the Hurricanes evened the score at 10-10, Maryland inched ahead to 16-15 on two straight kills by Brown, then scored three consecutive points on kills by Aramburu and a Miami error for 20-15. At 28-22, the Hurricanes had three points for 28-25, but the Terps' resolve set in and Jade Brown downed a kill, followed by a block by Mary Beth Brown and Aramburu for the 30-24 win.
The Terps had 17 kills alone in the first game.
Freshman outside hitter Hogan started things off for the Terps in the second game, as Maryland had a 3-0 lead. Miami battled back to take a 4-7 lead on key kills Francheska Savage and blocking by Savage and Ciara Michel. Miami extended their lead to 10-14, when Gillming and Jade Brown led a run of ten of the next 12 points for the Terrapins to take a 20-16 lead. Maryland would hold the margin and more for the remainder of the game, with Aramburu providing the final kill of the game for 30-24.
The Terps momentum was evident in the third game as the team came out with a 4-1 start. Miami quickly tied the game at 4-4, and again at 9-9 led by kills from Michel and Elescia McGee. The teams traded points through most of the game when, at 24-24, two kills downed by Gillming and Mary Beth Brown combined with a Miami error gave the Terps the late-game lead. Usher downed a kill to set up match point at 29-26, and Hogan had the final kill to seal the game for the Terps.
Maryland returns to Comcast Center for a Sunday 1 p.m. matchup against the Florida State Seminoles.
