Maryland volleyball dropped its fifth ACC contest of the season tonight, as the Terps were swept by Boston College 3-0 at Power Gym in Chestnut Hill (23-30, 27-30, 22-30). The Terps stand at 7-7 overall (0-5 ACC), while the Eagles improve to 5-9 (3-2 ACC).
The Terps outblocked the Eagles tonight (11-9), yet notched fewer digs (43-46) and kills (33-45) as Boston College finished the night with a .229 hitting percentage.
Outside hitter Jade Brown led the Terps with 13 kills (.229) and four blocks, as Beth Gillming recorded seven kills for a .263 hitting percentage. Senior setter Teryn Papp had 17 assists, while Tedi Doucet had eight on the night.
Sophomore Maggie Schmelzle led Maryland with 10 digs, while Brown and Gillming each tallied nine. Redshirt freshman Meredith Doyle led the team with six blocks.
Kelsey Johnson had the match-high of 15 kills (.257), while Abigail Hasebroock (.471) and Dorota Niemczewska (.286) each notched nine for the Eagles. Hasebroock also had 9 nine blocks for Boston College, while Allison Anderson had 18 digs. Brittany Pierpont finished with 34 assists for Boston College.
Maryland started the game with a 6-3 score, on kills by Mary Beth Brown and key blocking by Kathleen Wilson and Mary Beth Brown. The Eagles tied the game at 10-10, and built an eight-point lead. The Terps closed in within three at 23-26, on kills by Jade Brown and freshman outside hitter Ashley Hogan, but were overpowered by the Eagles and dropped the game, 23-30.
The Terps fell behind quickly in the second game, 0-4, before tying the game at 7-7 on kills by Jade Brown and Gillming. After 15-15, the Terrapins pushed ahead for 27-21 lead on kills by Jade Brown and Mary Beth Brown and five Eagle errors. The Terps offense struggled late in the match, when at 25-28, the Eagles scored five consecutive points for the win, 28-30.
Boston College jumped out to a 7-3 lead in the third game, and extended its lead at 14-7 and 18-11. Gillming's two kills and three Boston College errors brought the Terps within two at 19-21. Key blocking by Jade Brown and Doyle kept the Terps close at 20-25, but the Terps would fall, 22-30.
Maryland continues its schedule at home in College Park when it plays two matches, beginning with Georgia Tech on Friday, October 6th, followed by a Sunday contest against Clemson at 1 p.m.
