The Terrapin volleyball team dropped its second ACC match of the week today, as the Terps fell to Clemson, 3-0 (30-32, 25-30, 22-30) before 417 at the Comcast Center. Maryland stands at 8-8 overall (1-6 ACC), while Clemson improves to 10-4 (5-1 ACC).
"Clemson had key blocking today which challenged our offense," said head coach Janice Kruger. "We need to be more focused and reduce the number of errors for more wins."
The Terps posted a .170 hitting percentage with outside hitter Jade Brown leading all players with 18 kills, marking her twelfth match in 14 that she has been in double-figures in kills. She also recorded 14 digs, and two blocks bringing her total to 10 double-doubles this season.
Junior Beth Gillming (.400) downed nine kills on 20 attempts while redshirt freshman Kathleen Wilson (.267) recorded six kills and the team high of three blocks, helping the team to six total blocks.
Sophomore Maggie Schmelzle had 15 digs for the squad, as the team finished with 51 digs. Freshman Hayley Hanson collected 15 assists, while sophomore Tedi Doucet had 13.
The two teams traded points back and forth at the start of the first game and were tied 8-8. The Terps pulled ahead to 16-10 on Gillming's serve after an ace, two Tiger errors and key kills by Brown and extended the lead to 23-18. Clemson outside hitter Jeannette Abbott had two kills and Danielle Hepburn added one as the Tigers inched closer to 23-21 when Maryland called a timeout. The Terps had a 28-25 lead, but Clemson fought back with kills from Hepburn Kelsey Murphy to tie the game, moving ahead for the win at 30-32.
Abbott finished the night with 11 kills, while Lia Proctor had 12 for Clemson. Meghan Steiner led Clemson with six block assists, helping the team finish with 12 in the match.
The Terrapins had key opportunities in the second game as they opened with an 11-4 lead. Jade Brown downed a kill cross-court for 14-9, but four Terp errors and kills by Leslie Mansfield and Abbott gave the Tigers the lead at 17-19. The Terps stayed within three at 25-28, but kills by Meghan Steiner and Lia Proctor closed out the game for the Tigers, 25-30.
After a 3-3 start in the third game, Clemson scored nine consecutive points on Hepburn's serve for 3-12. Wilson and Jade Brown provided a key block for 4-12, and Gillming's kill at 11-17 sparked the Terps. Maryland moved to 17-21 after two Tiger errors, but the lead would hold as Clemson went on to win 22-30.
The Terps head to North Carolina for a four-match road swing starting with a Thursday night matchup against Duke at 7 p.m. on Oct. 12, followed by a Friday contest against Wake Forest at 7 p.m.
