Stepanek Leads Terps at Palmetto Tourney

KIAWAH ISLAND, S.C. - Senior Katie Stepanek closed with a final-round 75 on Tuesday to lead University of Maryland players at the Edwin Watts / Palmetto Intercollegiate women's golf tournament hosted by the College of Charleston.
The event was played at the Oak Point Golf Club.
Stepanek matched her first-round score of 3-over-par 75 in the final round. Stepanek finished the 54-hole event at 228, good enough for a tie for 32nd individually. Kelly MacWhinnie also shot a final-round 75 and tied for 44th at 232.
Also for Maryland, Katie Trotter tied for 50th at 233 following a 77 on Tuesday, with Kelly Calkin finished at 235 and tied for 58th. Jessica Reno tied for 67th with a 237 total.
As a team, Maryland had its best score on the final day, carding a 305. Maryland's total of 923 was tied for 13th in the team standings. The Terps were eight shots out of the top 10.
Campbell won the team event with an 879 total, winning by 10 strokes over East Tennessee State. Individually, Steffi Kirchmayr of the host College of Charleston was the medalist, going wire-to-wire after a first-round 69 and finishing at 2-under-par 214. She won by two strokes over Laura Jansone of East Tennessee State.
The event finishes the 2006 fall season for the Maryland women's golf team.
