COLLEGE PARK, Md. - The reigning NCAA Champion Maryland field hockey team is making its fourth-straight trip to the NCAA semifinals. The second-seeded and second-ranked Terps play seventh-ranked Connecticut on Friday, Nov. 17 at 7:30 p.m. at Kentner Stadium on the campus of Wake Forest University. The winner moves on to the championship game on Sunday, Nov. 19 and will be televised live on CSTV at 12 p.m.
This year's senior class is the first to make four-consecutive appearances in the national semifinals. Maryland (21-2) has captured four NCAA titles, but never in back-to-back years. The Terps are looking t accomplish that feat after winning last year's crown with a 1-0 win over Duke.
The Terps advanced to the semifinals with shutout victories over No. 17 Richmond (4-0) and No. 6 Penn State (1-0) last weekend. Maryland has posted 12 shutouts so far this season, also registering 20 wins for the second-straight year. UConn also had a pair of shutouts to advance to Winston-Salem, N.C., boasting a 21-3 record on the season. The Huskies won the Big East Championship to claim the conference's automatic bid.
Maryland and UConn have faced one other time in the NCAA Tournament. The Huskies defeated the Terps, 2-0, in the quarterfinals of the 1985 tournament. The teams met once again to open the 2000 campaign. Maryland won that meeting, 9-1.
Maryland plays its semifinal matchup after the #1 Wake Forest vs. #4 Duke clash at 5 p.m. The Terps, Demon Deacons and Blue Devils advanced to this point in the tournament in each of the last four years.
