Volleyball Faces NC State and North Carolina To Close Out Season

COLLEGE PARK, Md. - The Maryland Terrapin volleyball team looks to end the season on a high note, as they close out the year at home with contests against NC State and North Carolina. The Terps (4-16 ACC, 11-18) take on the Wolfpack (0-20, 2-27) Friday at 2:30 p.m., followed by a noon matchup against the Tar Heels on Saturday.

The Terrapins will recognize seniors Teryn Papp and Tina Aramburu for Senior Night prior to the start of the game versus NC State on Friday, Nov. 24 at 2:30 p.m.

Important Parking Information

Parking restrictions exist due to multiple weekend events. On Friday, Nov. 24, fans can park for free in lot 4b after 1:30 p.m. On Saturday, Nov. 25, fans can park for free in lot 4b until 1:30 p.m. If fans are already parked in lot 4b prior to 1:30 p.m., cars are permitted to remain in the lot. Those arriving after 1:30 p.m. will have to pay the football gameday $10 parking fee in lots surrounding Comcast Center

A Look at the Terps

Junior outside hitter Jade Brown (.208) continues to lead the Terps, posting a 3.72 kpg for the squad, as the Terrapins hold a .180 hitting percentage. Mary Beth Brown (.184) has a 2.09 kpg, while junior Beth Gillming has 1.98 kpg. Senior outside hitter Tina Aramburu has 59 kills this season, adding 83 digs and 47 blocks this year for the Terps.

Indianapolis-native Teryn Papp averages 5.06 assists for the team, while sophomore Tedi Doucet has a 4.44 a/g this season. Maryland has 11.58 a/g on the year.

On defense, the Terps have outblocked their opponent in 21-of-29 games this season. Maryland is second in the ACC and nineteenth in the NCAA with a 3.19 bpg. Freshman Katie Usher (1.55 bpg) has the team-high of 174 blocks, registering third in the league and sixteenth nationally. Redshirt sophomore Kathleen Wilson holds a 1.08 bpg for the Terps with 70 blocks, as Mary Beth Brown has a 0.98 bpg average with 104 blocks.

Sophomore Maggie Schmelzle (3.04 dpg) holds the team-best of 343 digs, while Gillming has a 2.95 dpg and Jade Brown has registered 2.35 dpg this year.

Last Weekend

The Terps suffered two tough five-game losses last weekend, falling to Georgia Tech (21-30, 30-26, 15-30, 30-26, 8-15) and Clemson (31-29, 28-30, 21-30, 30-28, 11-15) to close out their road schedule.

Jade Brown led all players with 19 kills, adding 14 digs and two blocks. Mary Beth Brown notched 10 kills, as Beth Gillming and Katie Usher (.375) combined for 16 kills. Usher notched a solo block and 11 block assists against the Yellow Jackets.

In the matchup against the Tigers, the Terrapins notched 76 digs on the season, adding 16 blocks with a .255 hitting percentage. Three players were in double-figure kills, including Jade Brown (21) and Maggie Schmelzle (12) who both recorded their thirteenth and second double-double of the season, respectively.

Mary Beth Brown collected 10 kills for the Terps and Usher registered seven, while Kathleen Wilson swatted two solo blocks and six block assists on the night.

About NC State

The Wolfpack (0-20 ACC, 2-27) finished their home slate last weekend (Nov. 17-18), dropping matchups against Florida State (30-26, 18-30, 15-30, 31-33) and Miami (23-30, 22-30, 26-30).

NC State has a .103 hitting percentage and is led by Jessica Williams (.185) with a 2.57 kpg, as Aiwane Iboya (.294) has a 1.73 kpg for the team. Allison Davis has the team-high of 9.15 a/g.

The team holds a 15.03 dpg, with Andrea Bentley (2.85 dpg) and Chrissy Zirpolo (2.58 dpg) leading on digs for the Wolfpack. NC State has a 2.08 bpg, with Iboaya leading the squad with a 1.01 bpg, including 18 solo blocks.

In the contest against Florida State, Kelley Blakewood posted a double-double (13 kills, 17 digs), while Bentley and Zirpolo combined for 43 digs. Against the Hurricanes, Jessica Williams registered 13 kills for the Wolfpack, while Blakewood and Alison Davis collected 13 and 12 kills, respectively.

The Terps won an Oct. 21 contest this season against the Wolfpack, rallying from a 2-0 decifit for the five-game win (24-30, 30-32, 30-28, 30-15, 15-11).

Maryland holds a 35-17 lead over the Wolfpack.

Scouting North Carolina

North Carolina (10-19 ACC, 8-12) won both of its matches last weekend (Nov. 16-17) to wrap up its home schedule, sweeping Florida State, (30-27, 30-26, 34-32) and defeating Miami 3-1 (30-12, 24-30, 30-28, 30-26).

The Tar Heels have won four of their last five matches. In the contest against the Seminoles, Meg Eckert posted a double-double (13 kills, 12 digs) and added seven service aces. Ashley Board led with 16 digs.

Senior Amy Beaver registered nine blocks against the Hurricanes for the Tar Heels, while Heather Brooks had 10 blocks. Megan Owens had 18 kills for North Carolina, as Brianna Eskola led all players with 29 digs.

Maryland is 20-30 all-time against North Carolina, falling earlier this season in Chapel Hill (24-30, 26-30, 27-30).

The team holds a .146 hitting percentage and averages 12.72 assists per game this season. Beaver (.254) leads North Carolina with 2.65 kpg, while Noelle Dyk (.145) has 3.23 kpg.

On defense, the Tar Heels average 2.52 bpg and 18.09 dpg. Beaver holds the team-high of 1.22 bpg, as Brianna Eskola (5.15 dpg) and Ashley Board (2.95 dpg) have combined for 843 digs this season.

Record Watch

With 167 block assists, middle hitter Usher needs 10 block assists to tie Rachel Wagener's (Maryland '05) single-season record of 177 (2003) block assists in a single-season. Usher is also ranked sixth on Maryland's single-season list with 174 total blocks.

Junior Jade Brown has 990 career kills, needing 10 to reach her 1,000th career-kill mark.

Brown has recorded 387 kills this season; if she notches 18 more before the end of the season, she will break into the top ten for kills in a single-season. Wagener currently holds the tenth spot for kills in a single-season with 405 (2005).

Jade Brown has 1,022 total attacks thus far this year, as Beth Murphy (Maryland, `98) has 1,076 total attacks for the tenth spot on the Terrapin single-season record list.

Junior co-captain Gillming recorded her 1,000th career dig on October 27 against Miami, she currently has collected 1,231 digs to date in her career.
