Jade Brown notched her 1,000th career-kill and posted her 15th double-double of the season to help lead the Terps to a sweep over NC State (30-15, 20-28, 30-20) before 278 at the Comcast Center today. Maryland improves to 12-18 (5-16 ACC), while NC State falls to 2-28, (0-21 ACC) on the season.
The Terrapins also marked Senior Day prior to the start of the match, honoring seniors Tina Aramburu and Teryn Papp.
"It was nice to get a win at home, we played good defense and our serving was very productive," said head coach Janice Kruger. "Senior Day is always a special event and we were happy to recognize Tina and Teryn and their contribution to the program."
In addition to Jade Brown's double-double (13 kills, 14 digs), Gillming recorded 7 kills and 11 digs for the Terps, collecting her seventeenth double-digit dig performance of the season.
Maggie Schmelzle (.333), Mary Beth Brown (.143) and Katie Usher (.625) each downed six kills, as the Terps posted a .308 hitting percentage in the match. Senior setter Teryn Papp recorded 16 assists, as freshman Hayley Hanson notched 17 for the Terps.
The Terrapins outblocked the Wolfpack (8.5-2), with five players collecting more than two blocks.
The teams were tied 7-7 at the start of the first game, when the Terps started to dominate, scoring 18 of the next 19 points under strong serving by Gillming and Schmelzle. Gillming and Schmelzle each registered two service aces, while kills by Usher and Jade Brown helped extend the lead to 27-12, while freshman Christina Paul downed a kill for the 30-15 win.
The Terps and the Wolfpack traded points in the second game, as Maryland held a slight edge at 12-11 after a kill by Gillming. When the Wolfpack rebounded, overtaking the lead to 14-15, the Terps responded with an eight-point scoring run with kills from Usher, Schmelzle and Mary Beth Brown for 22-15. NC State charged back, coming within one point at 29-28, yet Gillming provided the game-winning kill for 30-28.
In game three, the Terrapins charged to a 12-4 lead on kills from Gillming, Jade Brown and Mary Beth Brown. Usher's block off an attack by Melissa Rabe and Hanson's tip at 19-11 continued to move the Terps ahead. Kills down the stretch by Schmelzle and Jade Brown gave the Terps the 30-20 win.
The Terps return to the Comcast Center on Saturday for a noon matchup against North Carolina in their final game of the season.
