Terp Volleyball's Block Doesn't Stop Cavaliers

COLLEGE PARK, Md. - The University of Maryland women's volleyball three-game winning streak was snapped tonight as they fell to Virginia, 3-0, at Memorial Gym before a record crowd of 817 in Charlottesville, Va. The Cavaliers improve to 18-6 (11-4 ACC) while the Terps stand at 11-12 (4-10 ACC).

The Terps outblocked their opponent for the seventh-consecutive game, yet that wasn't enough as Maryland was held to a .200 hitting percentage, while Virginia posted .306 on the night.

Junior Jade Brown, freshman Katie Usher and freshman outside hitter Ashley Hogan each notched five blocks, while Jade Brown led the Terps with seven kills. Redshirt sophomore Mary Beth Brown downed six kills, while Hogan had five.

The Terrapins had 27 digs in the contest with Maggie Schmelzle led all players with eight.

Virginia posted an impressive 15 service aces in the match, with Lauren Dickson collecting five alone for the Cavaliers.

Maryland had a 3-3 tie at the start of the first game, but Virginia went on a short four-point run to move ahead, 4-7. Jade Brown and Mary Beth Brown had a key block for 6-7, but kills by Virginia's Lauren Dickson and Shannon Davis helped build an 8-14 lead. Virginia then scored six of the next nine points for 11-20. Virginia's Katie Oakes had three kills in the final four points for 18-30 and a Cavalier win.

The Terps were held to four kills in the first game, while Oakes and Sarah Kirkwood each had four kills. Emily Kirkwood had 11 assists in the first game.

The Terps trailed early in the second game, as the Cavaliers started with a 3-9 lead. Maryland played steadily and came within one point at 15-16 on kills by Usher, Hogan and Jade Brown. Virginia scored three straight and extended its lead to 21-27. After a Virginia error, Mary Beth Brown downed a kill and Jade Brown and Hogan paired up for a key block for 24-27. Yet, the Cavaliers held on and won the game 25-30.

Strong serving helped the Cavaliers win 10 of the first 12 points in the beginning of the third game for 2-10. With Virginia leading at 4-13, Maryland went on a four point run on Gillming's serve with blocking from Jade Brown and Hogan, while Mary Beth Brown added a kill for 11-16. The Terps struggled to narrow the gap, as Virginia built its largest lead scoring seven of the next eight points for 12-22. Aramburu downed a kill to halt the run, but the Cavaliers went on to win, 20-30.

The Terps head to Blacksburg, Va. for a 6 p.m. contest against Virginia Tech on Saturday.
