Terps Defeat Virginia in Semifinals
CHAPEL HILL, N.C. - With its win over Virginia on Friday afternoon, the top-ranked and top-seeded Maryland field hockey team advances to the ACC Tournament championship game on Sunday, Nov. 5. The finals matchup is a rematch of last season's title tilt, as the Terps take on second-ranked and fellow co-ACC Regular Season Champion Wake Forest. The game is slated for 12 p.m. and will be televised on a tape-delayed basis at 5:30 p.m. on Comcast SportsNet and Fox Sports.
Maryland got two goals apiece from Defensive Player of the Year Paula Infante (Santiago, Chile) and All-ACC honoree Susie Rowe (London, England) to lead the Terps passed fifth-seeded Virginia, 5-2.
The Terrapins play in the championship game for the third-straight year and the 19th time in school history. Maryland, who won the 2005 title in College Park with a 3-2 win over the Demon Deacons, has won six conference tournament titles.
Wake Forest has won two ACC titles, capturing back-to-back titles in 2002 and 2003. While Maryland boasts five All-ACC honorees this season in Infante, Rowe, senior Kristina Edmonds (Emmaus, Pa.), junior goalkeeper Kathryn Masson (Richmond, British Columbia) and freshman Nicole Muracco, WFU has four all-conference honorees on the squad.
The Terps won the regular-season matchup between the teams, a 3-2 decision on Sept. 23.
Maryland will also be going for its 20th win of the season and the six in program history. It would also be the first time the Terrapins have posted back-to-back 20-win campaigns.
