Virginia Tech outlasted Maryland volleyball tonight, as the Terps dropped just their second five-game loss of the season to the Hokies (25-30, 30-28, 12-30, 30-28, 10-15). The Hokies improve to 15-10 (8-8 ACC), while Maryland falls to 11-13 (4-11 ACC).
Freshman middle blocker Katie Usher (.483) recorded her season high of 17 kills, while Jade Brown notched 13 kills and Mary Beth Brown had nine kills. The Terps were held to a .115 hitting percentage in the match, as Virginia Tech posted a .209 in the contest.
The Terps had nine blocks, while the Hokies collected 13 on the night. Junior Beth Gillming had 23 digs for the squad and Maggie Schmelzle added 18.
The Hokies built a 3-6 lead in the first game with kills coming from Jennifer Albrecht. Jade Brown and Tina Aramburu's two kills, combined with a Hokie error, helped bring the Terps within one at 19-20. At 24-27, Usher downed a kill for 25-27, but Taylor Parrish would have two kills down the stretch as the Hokies won the first game, 25-30.
Outside hitter Mary Beth Brown and middle blocker Kathleen Wilson with kills to start things off for the Terps in the second game, as Maryland had a 6-2 lead. After Virginia Tech tied the game at 9-9, the Terps scored increased their lead at 13-16, scoring on a Jade Brown kill and two Tech errors. Parrish had key kills to tie the game at 16-16, and the teams traded points till Maryland held the edge at 25-23. Usher downed the kill for the final point at 30-26 for the second game.
Tech came out with a quick 3-8 score in the third game and Maryland struggled to contain the Hokie offense. Tech built their lead at 7-16 and 10-23, before winning the third game, 12-30.
The fourth game was a fierce contest for both teams. Service aces by Tedi Doucet and Hogan, and a kill by Usher, with three Hokie errors gave the Terps a 7-1 lead in the beginning of the game. Maryland held its margin at 10-3, but Virginia Tech tied the game at 14-14. The teams exchanged leads as Maryland led at 24-21. Freshman Hayley Hanson had a pinpoint set to Hogan to set up game point at 29-28, as the Terps won the game 30-28 on a Hokie error to force a deciding game.
At 3-5 in the fifth game, Maryland went on a 3-1 run to tie the game at 6-6 with key kills from Jade Brown, Usher, and Hogan. Hokie Kendra Sytsma had two kills to move ahead 7-9, followed shortly after by another service ace by Doucet for 10-13. Esbrook had a kill for 10-14, while a Terp attack error ended the game at 10-15.
The Terps host Boston College in a Tuesday night matchup at the Comcast Center on Nov. 7 at 6 p.m.
