The Terp volleyball team suffered their third-straight loss tonight, falling to Boston College (28-30, 24-30, 26-30) before 351 at the Comcast Center. Maryland drops to 11-14 (4-12 ACC), while the Eagles improve to 9-16 (7-9 ACC).
"The first game was critical for us. We should have won that, and it altered the momentum for the remainder of the match," said Kruger. "We need to look forward and focus on making minimal errors."
Jade Brown led all players with a .429 hitting percentage, with 15 kills and a block in the match. Mary Beth Brown and Katie Usher combined for 15 kills and five blocks each. The Terps were held to .140, collecting 38 assists in the effort.
Junior co-captain Beth Gillming posted ten digs on the night, while Maggie Schmelzle had nine for the squad. The Terps finished with 48 digs and eight blocks. Tedi Doucet and Hayley Hanson combined for 27 assists.
The teams were even at the start of the first game, with Maryland building a slight lead at 10-8. The Terps extended the margin at 17-13 and 20-15 on kills by Jade Brown, Ashley Hogan and Mary Beth Brown. Gillming and Usher had a key block at 24-20, but the Terps managed just two of the next eight points for a tie at 26-26. The Terrapins were ahead 28-27 on a kill by Mary Beth Brown, but a Terp error and two kills by Kelsey Johnson for a stunning loss, 28-30.
Jade Brown recorded seven kills in the first game.
Usher, Gillming and Jade Brown downed kills in the beginning of the second game, as the teams were tied, 5-5. The Eagles moved ahead 6-10 on a kill from Alison Shep and four Terp errors. After increasing their leads at 14-20 and 20-27, the Terps bounced back, scoring four of the next six points, including a kill by Mary Beth Brown from a set by Tina Aramburu, and fending off four game points. Boston College went on to win, 24-30, on a kill by Dorota Niemczewska who finished the match with 18 kills.
At 4-4 in the third game, Eagle libero Allison Anderson helped build a 4-7 lead with strong serving. An Eagle error at 9-10 kept the Terps within one, as the Terps stayed aggressive. At 11-17, key blocking by Kathleen Wilson, Usher and Mary Beth Brown helped the Terps tie the game, 21-21. Boston College's Brittany Pierpont had two straight service aces, yet Wilson and Mary Beth Brown swatted an Eagle attack, followed by an Aramburu kill for 25-26. The Terps notched two errors, before Niemczewska had a kill to win the match.
The Terrapins are back in action on Friday against ACC-leader Duke (21-3, 14-1 ACC) at 7 p.m. in the Comcast Center.
