COLLEGE PARK, Md. - The University of Maryland women's volleyball team has raised over $2,000 for the Susan G. Komen Breast Cancer Foundation in a "Dig for the Cure" fundraising event during this Friday's match against Duke. Maryland faces the ACC-leading Blue Devils Friday at 7 p.m. in the Comcast Center.
The Terps are among 20 NCAA Division I schools this season hosting a "Dig for the Cure" match for the Susan G. Komen Breast Cancer Foundation. The "Dig for the Cure," started by UNC-Charlotte, has helped raise nearly $40,000 since it began three years ago.
"It's great to contribute to a cause that is bigger than us," said freshman defensive specialist Christina Paul. "I've just mentioned it casually to people and they've made contributions because they've been impacted by the disease ... the kindness from strangers is great to see. I'm proud that we're doing this."
At the match, fans will have the opportunity to give a direct donation or pledge a "per/dig" amount. The final pledge amount will then be determined by the total amount of digs for the Terrapin team at the conclusion of the match. For example, if you pledge 50¢ per dig and the Terps tally 30 digs for the match, your pledge will equal $15.00.
The Terrapins hope to double their contribution by week's end. Some pledges have even indicated that they will give a larger contribution if the per-dig amount does not exceed the pledge promised.
"This has been a great experience to be able to try and help a great cause that affects so many," said Terrapin head coach Janice Kruger. "I hope we can make this an annual event for the Terp volleyball program."
The Susan G. Komen Breast Cancer Foundation was established in 1982 by Nancy Brinker to honor the memory of her sister, Susan G. Komen, who died from breast cancer at the age of 36. The Foundation is an international organization with a network of more than 75,000 volunteers working through local affiliates and events to eradicate breast cancer as a life-threatening disease.
