Maryland Volleyball Hosts Duke And Wake Forest This Weekend

COLLEGE PARK, Md. - With six games remaining in the regular season, Maryland volleyball hosts four contests in the Comcast Center including this weekend's matchups against ACC-leader Duke and Wake Forest. The Terps (11-14, 4-12 ACC) play the Blue Devils (22-3, 14-1 ACC) Friday at 7 p.m., followed by a Sunday contest against Wake Forest (13-12, 9-7 ACC) at 1 p.m.

A Look At the Terps

The Terps are registering a .179 hitting percentage and are led by Jade Brown (.202) who has a 3.47 kpg. Redshirt sophomore Mary Beth Brown (.180) holds a 2.15 kpg, while freshman Katie Usher (.217) has a 1.49 kpg. Senior setter Teryn Papp (5.26 a/g) and Tedi Doucet (4.54 a/g) lead in assists for the squad. Freshman Hayley Hanson has 2.47 a/g this season.

Ranked second in the ACC and twentieth in the NCAA, Maryland has a 3.15 bpg. Freshman middle blocker Katie Usher (1.50 bpg) leads the team with 141 blocks, and is third in the ACC behind Clemson's Danielle Hepburn (1.75 bpg) and Virginia's Katie Oakes (1.66 bpg).

Sophomore Maggie Schmelzle (3.06 dpg) and junior Beth Gillming (2.91 dpg) lead the team in digs, helping the Terrapins hold a 13.29 dpg. Jade Brown has posted 11 double-doubles this year and notched double-digit kills in 19-of-25 matches. Meanwhile, Schmelzle has tallied double-digit digs in 14 matches this season.

Junior Beth Gillming recorded her 1,000th career-dig in the match vs. North Carolina (Oct. 27). She is now ranked fifth on Maryland's all-time career-dig list.

Last Time Out

Maryland dropped a Tuesday night contest against Boston College (28-30, 24-30, 26-30) at the Comcast Center, marking their third loss in six games. Jade Brown had 15 kills for a .429 hitting percentage, as Mary Beth Brown and Usher notched eight and seven kills, respectively.

At Virginia (Nov. 3), the Terps outblocked their opponent for the seventh consecutive match, yet fell 3-0 (18-30, 25-30, 20-30). Junior Jade Brown, Usher and freshman outside hitter Ashley Hogan each notched five blocks, while Jade Brown led the Terps with seven kills. Redshirt sophomore Mary Beth Brown downed six kills, while Hogan had five. Gillming had 23 digs in the 3-2 (25-30, 30-26, 12-30, 30-28, 10-15) loss to Virginia Tech (Nov. 4), as Usher (.483) recorded her season high of 17 kills. Jade Brown notched 13 kills and Mary Beth Brown had nine kills. T

The Terps were held to a .115 hitting percentage in the match, as Virginia Tech posted a .209 in the contest.

About Duke

With a 22-3 record (14-1 ACC), the Blue Devils are ranked first in the ACC and have received votes in the latest AVCA / CSTV Coaches poll. Duke had broken into the Top 25, but dropped out of the poll after a 3-1 (25-30, 27-30, 30-25, 25-30) loss at Georgia Tech (Oct. 28).

Duke leads the ACC in kills (17.22 kpg), assists (15.93 a/g) and digs (19.60 dpg). In the NCAA, the Terps are ranked fifth in assists and sixth in blocks, while also No. 13 in digs. Setter Ali Hausfeld is No. 22 with 13.07 a/g and libero Jenny Shull is No. 30 with 5.51 dpg.

Carrie DeMange (.292) holds a 4.18 kpg, while Rachel Moss (.269) has a 3.97 kpg. Collectively, Duke has a .260 hitting percentage, 19.60 dpg, and 15.93 a/g.

The Terps meet the Blue Devils who are riding a four-game win streak, including a sweep Tuesday night against Wake Forest (30-14, 36-34, 30-23). Tealle Hunkus led all players with 18 kills, and Jenny Shull collected 31 digs.

The Blue Devils won a 3-0 (30-25, 30-19, 30-24) contest over NC State (Nov. 3). Carrie DeMange has 16 kills while Jenny Shull collected 23 digs against the Wolfpack. In the Nov. 1 matchup with North Carolina, Duke outlasted its interstate rival for a 3-2 victory (28-30, 22-30, 30-26, 30-24, 15-11). Rachel Moss had a career-high 23 kills and 20 digs.

Head coach Jolene Nagel (Edinboro '83) is in her 8th year with the Blue Devils, holding a 360-222 career record, and a 157-82 record at Duke. Nagel is 10-8 all-time against the Terrapins.

The Blue Devils are 7-2 away this season.

Scouting Wake Forest

Wake Forest (13-12, 9-7 ACC) has won four of its last nine games and holds a .184 hitting percentage. The Demon Deacons are led by Jessica Furlong (.159) with 3.63 kpg and Natalie Mullikin (.291) with a 3.03 kpg, with Mullikin adding 120 blocks this year (1.20 bpg).

Furlong's double-double (14 kills-13 digs) led the Demon Deacons in the 3-0 loss to Duke, as Wake Forest outblocked the Blue Devils, 9-6. Still, the Demon Deacons were held to .115 while the Blue Devils registered a .299 hitting percentage in the match.

Wake Forest won two matches last weekend (Nov. 1-3) over North Carolina and NC State in Winston-Salem, N.C. The Demon Deacons rallied from a two-game deficit to defeat the Tarheels. Furlong posted 29 kills and 18 digs in the match, as freshman setter Dylan Faulkner collected 60 assists for the second time this season.

Four players recorded double-digit digs in the three-game sweep against NC State (30-25, 30-19, 30-24).

The Terps lost a five-game heartbreaker to the Demon Deacons in their Oct. 13 contest (30-25, 29-31, 30-26, 19-30, 10-15) in Winston-Salem.

Coming Up

Maryland heads south for its last roadtrip of the season next weekend (Nov. 17-18) when they face Clemson, Nov. 17 at 7 p.m. and Georgia Tech, Nov. 18 at 7 p.m. before heading back to College Park for matchups with NC State (Nov. 24) and North Carolina (Nov. 25).

Senior day is scheduled for Friday, Nov. 24 prior to the NC State match. Seniors Teryn Papp (Bloomingtn, Inc.) and Tina Aramburu (Stafford, Va.) will be recognized.

Post-Season

For the second consecutive year, the ACC Champion will be determined by the regular season schedule rather than a conference tournament.

With an 18-4 record in 2005, Maryland was ACC Co-Champion with North Carolina, while attaining the 2004 and 2003 conference titles by winning the ACC Tournament.
