The Atlantic Coast Conference announced today that Stephanie Smith, Stephanie Doiron and Beth Gillming were named to the inaugural 2005 All-ACC Academic Volleyball Team. The University of Maryland is one of three ACC schools that had three student-athletes selected to the team.
The student-athletes were chosen based upon having earned a 3.0 grade point average for the previous semester and maintained a 3.0 cumulative average during her academic career.
Smith, an Education major from Bethesda, Md., is one of the most prolific players in Terrapin history. This past season, Smith registered 328 kills (2.69 kpg), 164 blocks (1.34 bpg) and a .370 hitting percentage. She was named to the 2005 ACC Preseason Team, was an All-ACC First Team selection, chosen to the AVCA Division I All-Region Team and was a AVCA All-America Honorable Mention.
She posts a 91-42, (44-26 ACC) career playing record and made an indelible mark in the Terrapin record books. As a middle-blocker, Smith ranks No. 2 all-time in solo blocks (87), block assists (515) and total blocks (602). She also is third in single-season hitting percentage (.371), single-season total blocks (184 in 2004) and second in single-season block assists (158 in 2004). Her .370 hitting percentage landed her as No. 27 in the NCAA in 2005.
Doiron, a senior libero hailing from Ontario, Canada, also garnered the All-ACC Academic honor as a kinesiology major. Doiron had a team-high 546 digs (4.46 dpg) during the 2005 season which also ranks No. 1 on Maryland's all-time single-season list. In her career, she had 728 digs (2.64 dpg) and 55 service aces.
Gillming, a sophomore outside-hitter, registered 280 kills during the 2005 season for a 2.30 game average. The Education major had 348 digs on the year (2.85 dpg) and 67 service aces. She has 782 career digs (3.17 dpg), 302 career kills (1.22 kpg), and 63 service aces. Gillming was second on the team with the highest number of double-doubles for the 2005 season.
