COLLEGE PARK, Md. -
Four student-athletes from the University of Maryland were among the honorees Thursday as the Atlantic Coast Conference announced academic and athletic awards to its member institutions.
Women's soccer player Kimmy Francis, men's lacrosse player Brendan Healy and gymnast Mandy Pascual were among the 36 recipients of Weaver-James-Corrigan postgraduate scholarships.
Student-athletes receiving those awards have performed with distinction in both the classroom and in their respective sports, while demonstrating exemplary conduct in the community.
The scholarships are given to selected student-athletes who intend to pursue a graduate-level degree following graduation. Each recipient will receive $5,000 to use toward their postgraduate studies.
In addition, men's soccer player Jason Garey received a Weaver-James-Corrigan Honorary Award. Garey, who also won the Hermann Trophy as the top collegiate men's soccer player in the nation in 2005, was among eight student-athletes recognized for outstanding performance in both athletic competition and the classroom throughout their collegiate careers and who intend to compete at the Olympic or professional level.
All 44 student-athletes will be honored on April 13, 2006, in Greensboro, N.C., at a luncheon hosted by the Nat Greene Kiwanis Club.
