Katie Trotter finished in a tie for third and Jessica Reno rallied to join her in the top-10 individually to lead the University of Maryland to the team title Tuesday at the Pinehurst Challenge women's golf tournament played at Pinehurst No. 8.
Maryland shot 305 on Tuesday to finish with a 917 total over the 54-hole event. UNC Wilmington and Mississippi State each shot 302 in the final round, but the eight-shot lead the Terps carried into Tuesday's play was too much to make up. UNCW and Mississippi State tied for second at 922.
The Terrapins led the team standings in all three days, never relinquishing the lead after firing 302 in the first round on Sunday. It was Maryland's first team title of the 2005-06 season.
Trotter shot a 3-over-par 75 on Tuesday to finish the tournament at 224 and a tie for third. She was three strokes behind UNC Wilmington's Michelle Jarman, who took the individual title with a final-round 71.
Junior Jessica Reno had Maryland's best round of the final day with a 74 to improve to a tie for sixth place at 227. Junior Katie Stepanek gave the Terps three top-20 finishes with a tie for 12th at 231.
Kelly MacWhinnie had a final-round 78 to finish at 238 and tie for 31st, with Kelly Calkin at a 239 total and a tie for 37th after also shooting a 78 on Tuesday.
Maryland will compete next Monday and Tuesday at the Lady Herd / El Diablo Intercollegiate Tournament in Florida.
