COLLEGE PARK, Md. - Five-time National Coach of the Year Missy Meharg recently announced the addition of Kelsie Ward to an already talented class of 2010. The NCAA and ACC Champion Terps have also named its captains for the upcoming 2006 fall campaign. Paula Infante and Christina Restivo, who will be seniors next fall, were selected to serve as team captains.
A native of Camden, Del., Kelsie Ward hails from the same hometown as Coach Meharg and first team All-American and 2006 Delaware Athlete of the Year Jackie Ciconte. A senior at Caesar Rodney High School, she helped her team with the 2004 state title and conference championship. The squad successfully defended its conference title in 2005, while she was voted first team all-league.
"Kelsie is a ruthless competitor who knows what it means to work hard on and off the field," said Meharg. "Her attitude is contagious and can play any position for the Terps."
Ward was also a second team all-conference honoree in 2003 and was named to the second team in 2004. She has been a solid student in her four years, as well, being named to the Honor Roll every semester and was a Scholar Athlete from 2002-06.
Paula Infante and Christina Restivo helped the 2005 Terps capture the program's sixth ACC crown and fourth NCAA title. Infante earned the Honda Sports Award, presented to the top field hockey player in the nation. Restivo helped the defense post a 1.01 goals against average, rating it as the second-best defense in the nation. Most recently, with Infante and Restivo captaining the squad, they led Maryland to win the 2006 Big Apple International Indoor Tournament in New York City in February. Infante was named Most Valuable Player of the tournament.
Ward joins an already talented class of Brianna Davies, Kate Effland, Kristina Foster, Alicia Morawski, Nicole Muracco and Alexis Pappas.
