COLLEGE PARK, Md. - Athletics Director Deborah A. Yow announced that Maryland Athletics has received an honor roll award from the National Consortium for Academics and Sports Degree Completion Program for the second consecutive year. The NCAS, based at the University of Central Florida, administers the degree completion program to assist former student-athletes who have exhausted their eligibility to return to campus and earn their graduation.
In the past 20 years, more than 26,000 student-athletes have returned to schools to complete their degrees after their eligibility expired. The University of Maryland is one of 226 schools across the United States that are members of the program.
At the University of Maryland, the Academic Support for Returning Student-Athletes Program (ASRAP) was established to provide advising, career and financial support to former student-athletes returning to complete their degree. In order to qualify, returnees must participate in ASRAP outreach activities and programs such as National Student-Athlete Day and the Terp Reading Program.
NCAS member institutions have contributed $273 million in tuition and fees, and in return have received more than 15.7 million hours of outreach and community services offered by former student-athletes.
In a letter announcing the honor, NCAS President and CEO Dr. Richard Lapchick noted "this award represents your commitment to developing leadership in your student-athletes, your emphasis on education and the care and concern the University of Maryland has for its community. It is because of the University of Maryland's outstanding efforts that the NCAS is recognized as a leader amongst sports and sports-related organizations."
