BROWNS SUMMIT, N.C. -
Katie Trotter shot a 2-under-par 70 to highlight a strong day by the University of Maryland as the Terrapins moved up one spot to 13th following Friday's second round of the NCAA East Regional Women's Golf Championship.
Trotter, a sophomore from Pittsburgh, Pa., had three birdies and one bogey during her final nine holes of the day to finish off the Terps' best individual round of the tournament so far. It was Trotter's lowest 18-hole score of the season, as she had posted a 72 earlier in the spring.
Her round moved her up 32 spots to a tie for 64th overall after 36 holes, as she finished the first two days with a 152 total.
As a team, Maryland shot 294 on the second day for a 599 total. It was the Terrapins' lowest 18-hole team total of the spring season and moved them up one spot from 14th to 13th. The Terrapins, making their first-ever appearance in the NCAA Tournament, are three shots behind Virginia and Vanderbilt for 11th and are seven shots out of the top eight and a qualifying spot for the NCAA National Championships in Columbus, Ohio, later this month.
Kelly MacWhinnie, who led Maryland with an opening-round 72 on Thursday, was still atop the leaderboard for the Terps after 36 holes. She shot a 78 on Friday for a 150 total that tied her for 42nd individually.
Jessica Reno was tied for 55th after a 2-over-par 74 and a 151 total. Reno was even over her final 11 holes on the day.
Katie Stepanek also shot a 74 on Friday, taking advantage of back-to-back birdies on her first two holes of the day, the 10th and 11th on the course as Maryland started its day on the back nine. Stepanek was tied for 73rd at 153 with teammate Kelly Calkin, who had a 76 on Friday. Calkin had three birdies on the day, including back-to-back birdies on the third and fourth.
First-round individual leader Jenny Suh of Alabama held onto her lead after Friday's play. She had a 70 on Friday for a 5-under-par total of 139. She led by one stroke over Tennessee's Marci Turner and Mandy Goins of Wake Forest.
LSU shot its second straight even-par 288 as a team and topped the standings after 36 holes. Tennessee rallied for second after a 286 total put the Lady Vols two shots behind. California, which was tied with LSU for the team lead after the first day, shot a 295 and finished the day in third place.
Maryland will tee off in Saturday's final round at 12:30 p.m.
