COLLEGE PARK, Md. - Former Maryland field hockey player Keli Smith is the fourth player to be named to the U.S. Field Hockey World Cup training squad. The total number of Terps on the Senior National team is four.
Smith, along with Lauren Powley, Sara Silvetti and Dina Rizzo, continue to prepare for the World Cup at the USA Field Hockey National Training Center in Virginia Beach, Va. The 24-member training roster will be cut to 18 prior on August 28. The World Cup takes place in Madrid, Spain, Sept. 27-Oct. 8.
Smith took a year off from playing with the U.S. National Team and returned this summer, helping the Maryland Elite Performance team, which was coached by Terrapins Missy Meharg and Tjerk van Herwaarden, win the USFHA National Tournament this summer. Smith was a member of the 2002 World Cup squad, scoring the game-winning goals against New Zealand to send the U.S. to the 9th/10th-place game.
