COLLEGE PARK, Md. - The University of Maryland football team held their second scrimmage of the preseason and the defense made a stand in the closed session from Byrd Stadium. A week after the offense marched up and down the field seemingly at will, the Terp defense posted a number of big plays in today's outing.
On the day, the Terrapin defense posted seven sacks, 13 TFLs, three interceptions and three pass breakups. Quarterback Sam Hollenbach -- in the midst of an outstanding preseason camp -- had likely his roughest outing, finishing 9-of-21 for 65 yards with an interception. His numbers were skewed somewhat by a few drops, but the senior had trouble finding his rhythm. Backup Jordan Steffy was 5-of-9 for 58 yards with a TD and an interception, continuing to show that the Terps have two solid QBs heading into 2006.
The biggest spark of the day on the offensive side came from senior Josh Allen. Allen had probably his best day of the preseason, rushing for 65 yards on 11 carries, adding a 12-yard TD run for the scrimamge's first score of the day.
Defensively, Mack Frost had a pair of sacks, Moses Fokou a sack and a TFL and three players (Christian Varner, David Holloway and Brandon Jackson-Mills) posted interceptions. Jackson-Mills returned a Jeremy Ricker pass 25 yards for a touchdown.
Below are stats from Saturday's outing. The Terrapins will return to the practice fields Monday, their final week of preseason before game-week preparations begin on August 28th for the Sept. 2 opener against William & Mary.
