COLLEGE PARK, Md. - The reigning 2006 NCAA and ACC Champion field hockey team recently selected its team captains, five-time NFHCA National Coach of the Year Missy Meharg recently announced. Last year's Honda Sports Award winner Paula Infante was named team captain, while classmate Kristina Edmonds was voted vice captain.
The first and vice captain are among international team competition traditions.
A senior, Infante (Santiago, Chile) has been a vital component to the Terrapin squad who has reached three-straight NCAA semifinals and captured the conference and national crowns last season. She is a three-time first team All-American and became just the second Honda Award field hockey winner in school history.
Also a senior, Edmonds (Emmaus, Pa.) was a first team Mid-Atlantic All-Region honoree for the first time in her career last year. She was a key member of a defense which was ranked second in the nation, allowing just 1.01 goals per game. In her three years in a Maryland uniform, she worked her way into becoming a full-time starter a season ago.
Maryland was ranked No. 1 in the NFHCA Top 20 Preseason Coaches Poll. The Terps open competition on Saturday, Aug. 25 against the University of the Pacific.
