For the 10th-straight year, the top-ranked and reigning NCAA champion Maryland field hockey team has opened the season with a 2-0 record, defeating Stanford, 4-1, on Sunday at the Varsity Field Hockey Turf. Freshman Nicole Muracco notched two goals in the final minutes to secure the win.
Maryland scored their goals in bunches. At 10:54 of the first half, the Terps struck gold when senior Paula Infante (Santiago, Chile), a three-time All-American, scored off an assist from junior Janneke van Leeuwen (Hilversum, Netherlands) and Berber Rischen (Rotterdam, Netherlands). Then at 13:30, the Terrapins scored again on an unassisted goal by senior Emily Trycinski (Nazareth, Pa.).
Maryland outshot the Cardinal (1-1), 11-4, in the first half, and appeared to have the game in hand when Stanford scored at 55:43 in the second half. Aska Sturdevan rocketed a shot past Terrapin goalkeeper Kathryn Masson to cut the Maryland lead in half at 2-1. Both teams played even through the next 13 minutes, but then the visitors struck quick on goals by freshman Nicole Muracco (Sewell, N.J.) at 68:28 and 69:25 to secure the victory.
Stanford goalkeeper Madison Bell faced 30 shots from the Maryland offense, and was credited with a career-high eleven saves. Terp netminder Kathryn Masson (Richmond, British Columbia) notched five.
The Terps will take a day off before returning to the pitch on Tuesday, August 29, traveling to the University of California.
