Sophomore Maggie Schmelzle led the University of Maryland women's volleyball team with 14 kills and seven digs today to overtake Florida International University, 3-2 (33-31, 30-20, 17-30, 17-30, 16-14) in its second contest of the Hilton Garden Inn Greenbelt Invitational. The Terrapins' record improves to 6-1, as FIU falls to 7-4.
Maryland's blocking proved to be the difference again today, as the Terrapins outblocked the Golden Panthers 20-11. Katie Usher tallied 10 block assists, while Mary Beth Brown and Meredith Doyle each collected eight block assists. Jade Brown recorded nine kills in the match, as Usher and Beth Gillming each tallied eight in the match.
The Terrapins dominated the first two games, registering a. 238 hitting percentage in the first game and their match-high of .360 in the second game. The Terps had a 10-5 lead in the first game, as the Golden Panthers rallied back to tie the game at 12-12. Maryland extended its lead and, with two consecutive kills by Jade Brown and Gillming, had a 22-19 advantage. The teams exchanged leads and were tied late in the game at 29-29. Schmelzle's kill and key blocks by Doyle and Mary Beth Brown gave the Terps the first game at 33-31.
Schmelzle downed four kills on five swings in the second game for an .800 hitting percentage. Olga Vergun notched five kills in the game for FIU, as Yarimar Rosa and Arasay Guerra notched three for the Golden Panthers. The Terps won the second game by a score of 30-20.
FIU's Vergun and Rosa combined for 13 kills in the third game. Yarimar had seven kills on seven tries to lead the Golden Panthers over the Terps, 17-30. The Terps found themselves in similar circumstances in the fourth game as Vergun and Rosa collected 14 kills for a match-high .444 hitting percentage. The Golden Panthers went on to win, 17-30, to push the match to a fifth game.
Maryland jumped to a 5-0 lead in the deciding game on two kills by Jade Brown and blocks by Doyle and Mary Beth Brown. The Golden Panthers inched closer, pulling within two at 9-11, then tying the score at 13 all. Maryland pulled ahead on three consecutive blocks for the 16-14 win.
Maryland plays No. 3 UCLA at 7:30 p.m. tonight in the Comcast Center Pavilion.
