Calkin Rallies for Individual Title

LOUISVILLE, Ky. - Kelly Calkin of the University of Maryland fired a 2-under-par round of 70 on Tuesday to move from fourth place to the individual title at the Napa River Grill Cardinal Classic women's golf tournament.
Calkin, a Terrapin junior from St. Charles, Ill., had the lone subpar round of the day in the 79-player field and finished the 54-hole tournament with a 217 total. She was in fourth place after the first two rounds, played on Monday.
She won the medalist honor by two strokes over second-round leader Jenny Calkins of Louisville, who shot a 76 at the par-72 Cardinal Club Golf Course on Tuesday. Emilie Geury of Augusta State was third with a 220 total. It was Calkin's first individual win as a collegian.
As a team, Maryland shot a 295 team score, the best score of the final round by nine strokes. The Terps finished at 908, moving up three positions to claim third in the team standings. Host Louisville won the team title at 892, while Augusta State was second at 897.
Maryland had two other top-20 individual finishes in the tournament. Katie Stepanek had a 74 on Tuesday to finish at 227 and move up nine spots to a tie for 12th. Jessica Reno was at 229 to tie for 17th after a final-round 77.
Katie Trotter shot a 74 on Tuesday to move up 12 spots to 35th individually with a 235 total, while Kelly MacWhinnie had a 77 Tuesday to finish 63rd at 250.
Maryland plays next on Oct. 16 through 18 at the Georgia State Pelican Preserve Invitational in Fort Myers, Fla.
