Terp Volleyball Opens Season With Second Straight Win

COLLEGE PARK, Md. - Junior outside hitter Jade Brown posted a double-double with 16 kills and 11 digs to lead the Terps today for their second straight win in the TIS Bookstore Invitational at Indiana University in Bloomington, Ind. The Terps overcame Marshall 3-1 after dropping the first game of the match (25-30, 31-29, 30-20, 30-28).

The Terps had a .276 hitting percentage and ten blocks with three Terrapins in double figures in kills. Brown recorded a .353 hitting percentage while sophomores Meredith Doyle and Maggie Schmelzle had an impressive .611 and .241 hitting percentage, respectively. Doyle added five blocks, including one solo, for her day's effort while Terrapin freshman Katie Usher had five block assists for the squad.

Maryland was held to a .158 hitting percentage in the first game falling 25-30, as Marshall posted its match-high of a .283 hitting percentage in that game with Kelly-Anne Billingly taking charge for the Thundering Herd with a stunning 32 kills for the match.

The Terps rebounded quickly winning the next three straight games, rolling to a match-high .533 hitting percentage in the third game, with six Terrapins recording six or more kills in the contest.

"We made some adjustments in our lineup and players were productive," said head coach Janice Kruger. "Jade Brown has had two big matches showing a great attack and ball control. We'd like to see our size play out more in blocks."

Senior setter Teryn Papp recorded 28 assists, while sophomore Tedi Doucet contributed 23 assists against Marshall.

The Terps swept the Chicago State Bears 3-0 in their season-opener last night in the TIS Bookstore Invitational at Indiana University, marking their second straight season-opening win. Maryland won 30-18, 30-14, 30-21 over the Bears, as Chicago State falls to 0-4 on the season.

Maryland juniors Jade Brown and Mary Beth Brown each posted double-digit kills for the Terps, helping the team to a .383 hitting percentage for the match. Jade Brown led the Terps with 14 kills (.480 hitting percentage), while Mary Beth Brown recorded ten kills (.292 hitting percentage) and two block assists. Nine players recorded kills for the squad.

The Terrapins had eight blocks on the night with outside hitter Maggie Schmelzle leading the team with three, while middle blockers Meredith Doyle, Kathleen Wilson and freshman Katie Usher each posted two block assists in their debut for the Terps. Usher registered an impressive eight kills for a .636 hitting percentage.

The freshman showed strong serving for the team as Christina Paul had three aces, with Hayley Hanson adding one ace and three digs.

The Terps play an evening contest at 7:00 p.m. against Indiana in University Gym. The game can be followed on Gametracker.
