Junior Jade Brown posted 17 kills and 17 digs for her second double-double Saturday night to lead the Terps to a 3-2 victory over host Indiana to close out the tournament at the TIS Bookstore Invitational in Bloomington, Ind. Game scores were 30-27, 30-27, 18-30, 22-30, 15-3.
Brown, named the tournament's MVP, was one of four Terrapins to notch ten or more kills, adding five block assists and three aces on the night. Team co-captain Beth Gillming joined J. Brown with a double-figure kill night with 14 digs, while sophomore Maggie Schmelzle collected ten kills and 11 digs. Mary Beth Brown notched ten kills, while sophomore Meredith Doyle and freshman Katie Usher each had nine kills for the squad.
Doyle and Teryn Papp were named to the all-tournament team.
Maryland's defense held Indiana to a .174 hitting percentage as it out-blocked the Hoosiers (15-11). Six Terps posted blocks in the match, with Doyle holding the team-high of eight block assists. Indiana had the edge notching three more digs than the Terps (72-75), with J. Brown holding the team high for the Terrapins.
The Terps out-hit the Hoosiers in game one (.475-.250) and held on for the second win in game two (30-27), before Indiana fought back and won the next two games. Teryn Papp led the Terrapins with 32 assists as sophomore Tedi Doucet tallied 27 assists.
Maryland dominated the final game, recording a .667 hitting percentage, paving the way for the 15-3 final game score and victory.
The Terrapins travel to Long Island, N.Y. for the Stony Brook Invitational (Sept. 8-9) next week where they face Albany, Stony Brook and No. 15 Ohio.
