Terps Hit The Road For Match At Dartmouth On Friday

Sept. 7, 2006

College Park, Md. - The Maryland Terrapin women's soccer team travels to Hanover, N.H., for its first real road game of the 2006 season when it takes on the Dartmouth Big Green at Chase Field on Friday, September 8, at 4:00 p.m.

Scouting The Big Green
• The Big Green is 0-2 on the season with two one-goal defeats at the Auburn Classic.

• In its 2006 opener, then 22nd-ranked Dartmouth lost a 1-0 heartbreaker to #16 Auburn. The game's lone goal came on a penalty shot midway through the first overtime period. The Big Green outshot the host Tigers 8-6.

• Dartmouth tried to rebound from that loss, but dropped another one-goal heartbreaker to Virginia Commonwealth. The Commodores rallied from a 2-1 deficit to win the game 3-2. Becky Poskin scored both goals for the Big Green in the loss.

• Coach Angie Hind is in her second season at the helm of the Big Green program and has a record of 12-7-1. Hind's program returns nine starters from a 2005 team that finished the season 12-5-1 and earned a berth into the NCAA Tournament.

A Quick Look At The Terps
• Maryland is 2-1-1 after a successful two-game homestand that had to be altered due to the effects of heavy rains associated with tropical depression Ernesto.

• In the 2006 home opener, Maryland was frustrated for the second-straight season by Towson and their junior goalkeeper Brandi Daniels. The game ended in a 0-0 tie despite the Terps holding a 30-11 advantage in shots. The scoreless tie extended Maryland's scoring drought to 217 minutes dating back to the 73rd minute of the season opener.

• That scoring drought didn't last much longer as the Terps broke through with a 6-0 rout of UMBC. Junior midfielder Melissa Hornfeck (right) scored twice and added an assist against the Retrievers. Hornfeck's five points against UMBC marked the first time since Oct. 1, 2003 that a Terrapin has tallied five points in a game. Senior midfielder Sarah Sample, junior forward Kelly Rozumalski and freshman midfielder Emily Maynard each had a goal and an assist for Maryland. Redshirt-sophomore defender Lauren Gamble scored the first goal of her career. Stevie Dunning, Molly Dreska and Amanda Paizs each picked up an assist in the victory.

The Maryland-Dartmouth Series
• This will be the just the second meeting between the Terps and the Big Green.

• Maryland won the only other meeting between the two schools - 2-1 in overtime on October 24, 1997 in College Park.

• Robin McClullough scored both goals for the Terrapins. She scored the game's first goal in the 75th minute off an assist from Keri Sarver. The Big Green tied the game with less then five minutes remaining in the second half, but McCullough scored the game-winner in the 96th minute unassisted.

Playing The Best
• Once again in 2006, Maryland will play one of toughest schedules in the nation.

• The Terps take on eight teams ranked in the preseason NSCAA poll including four of the top eight teams. The Terps face No. 2 UCLA (Aug. 27) and No. 14 Tennessee (Aug. 25) at the Penn State Classic, at No. 4 North Carolina (Oct. 1), host No. 6 Florida State (Oct. 5), host No. 8 Virginia (Oct. 22), at No. 10 Boston College (Oct. 27), host No. 12 Duke (Oct. 14) amd at No. 23 Wake Forest (Sept. 28).

Beating The Best
• During seven of the past eight seasons, Maryland has at least one upset win or tie of a top-10 ranked team: 4-3 win at No. 9 Duke on Sept. 19, 1999 and a 2-1 victory over Clemson on Oct. 17, 1999; a 3-1 win over No. 4 Penn State on Aug. 29, 2000; a 1-0 overtime over No. 8 Clemson on Oct. 13, 2001 and a 1-1 tie at No. 2 North Carolina on Nov. 1, 2002. The Terps stunned No. 3 UCLA 2-1 at the Virginia Soccer Classic on Sept. 12, 2004. A month and a half later, Maryland beat No. 10 Duke 1-0 in overtime at Ludwig Field. The Terps topped all of those victories with a 1-0 shutout of No. 2 seed Penn State in the 2004 NCAA Tournament. The win also snapped the Nittany Lions 39-game home winning streak and was head coach Paula Wilkins' first-ever loss at Jeffrey Field. The Terps extended that streak in 2005 with a 2-1 upset of No. 8 Boston College on Oct. 29 at Ludwig Field. Jeffrey Field proved lucky for the Terps again in the 2006 season opener as they knocked off No. 10 Tennessee 1-0 at the Penn State Classic on Aug. 25.

Playing Overtime
• The Terps are no strangers to playing extra minutes. So far this season they have had one overtime game, a 0-0 tie with Towson on Sept. 2.

• Maryland played six overtime games in 2005, tying for the second most in team history with the 1988 team. That '88 squad was 1-3-2 in those six games, while the 2005 Terrapins were 1-2-3.

• The record for most overtime games in a single season belongs to the 2004 Maryland team, which played in eight overtime contests (2-2-4).
