Jade Brown's 15 kills led the Maryland volleyball team to a 3-0 victory (30-25, 30-17, 31-29), over the University at Albany Friday afternoon in the Holiday Inn Express Invitational at Stony Brook University. With the win, Maryland improved its record to 4-1 overall, while the Great Danes dropped to 2-5.
Brown's 15 kills (.429) and 10 digs marked her fourth double-double in five matches, while junior Mary Beth Brown added 11 kills. Junior co-captain Beth Gillming finished with seven kills and seven digs, while Tina Aramburu collected five kills (.625).
The Terrapins posted a .265 hitting percentage and seven-and-a-half blocks. Maggie Schmelzle, playing libero for the first time in her career, registered nine digs in the Terps' victory, with Meredith Doyle's four block assists led the defense.
Maryland stayed even with Albany midway through the first game, with Mary Beth Brown providing a strong service performance. The Terps broke things open after an Albany error and a service ace by Tina Aramburu to move ahead 21-18. Maryland extended the lead to 29-25, with Jade Brown and Katie Usher sharing a block to close the game at 30-25.
The Terps took over in the second game, recording 15 kills for a match-high .345 hitting percentage and just five errors in the game. Gillming's two kills and a service ace by Mary Beth Brown moved the Terps ahead to 10-5, providing the Terps with momentum with key kills to increase the lead to 20-12 and cruising to a 30-17 second-game victory.
The Great Danes' offense sparked in game three, recording 15 kills in the final game. Shelby Goldman led Albany with 18 kills on 42 swings for the night. After losing a four-point lead at 18-14 to bring the game to within one of its 18 ties, the Terps found themselves at 28-28 down the stretch. Jade Brown provided three kills in the last four points to cement the 31-29 win for the Terps.
Maryland plays host Stony Brook Saturday at 5:00 p.m.
