The Terrapins' strong blocking wasn't enough to top No. 17 Ohio today, as the Terps fell 3-1 (29-31, 30-26, 23-30 and 22-30) at the Holiday Inn Express Invitational in Long Island, N.Y. The Terps stand at 3-1, while Ohio improves to 4-2 on the season.
Junior outside hitter Jade Brown led the Terrapins with 20 kills, 14 digs, and five solo blocks, posting her third double-double in four matches. Mary Beth Brown had nine kills (.259) in the match, while Meredith Doyle tallied eight kills (.293) and three solo blocks. Beth Gillming and Maggie Schmelzle each notched nine digs for Maryland, with Teryn Papp recording 20 assists in the contest.
The Terps dominated defensively out-blocking the Bobcats (16-7), with seven Terrapins registering blocks in the match.
Ohio's top offensive player Ellen Herman had 21 kills for a .333 hitting percentage. Stephanie Blackburn finished with 17 kills and 20 digs for Ohio, while Melissa Griffin posted 12. Amanda Anderson finished with 11 kills for the Bobcats.
The first game was a fierce contest as the teams registered 13 ties in the matchup. The Terps held the lead at 16-13, when Ohio came back to bring the score to 20-20 on a kill by Griffin. Maryland had game point at 29-28, when a Terrapin error brought the Bobcats back in the game. Ohio won the game 31-29 on a kill by Blackburn.
A confident Maryland team came out in the second game with a 16-11 lead with two kills and key blocking by Jade Brown and Beth Gillming. The Terps' momentum continued, building the lead to 20-14 before Ohio fell 30-26.
Ohio built a ten-point lead over Maryland in the third game, when the Terps' came within four points at 25-21 on a kill by Kathleen Wilson from Teryn Papp. Ohio outlasted the Terrapins and led the remainder of the game to win 23-30.
In the fourth game, Maryland held the edge at 13-12 on a key block by Jade Brown, and stayed within one point at 18-19 when Meredith Doyle had a kill from Tedi Doucet. The Bobcats extended their lead to 20-26, and went on to win 22-30.
