Gold, Kay Have Low Rounds at VCU

RICHMOND, Va. - Chris Gold opened with a 3-under-par score of 69, while Andrew Kay closed with a 69 in Monday's rounds of the VCU Shootout men's golf tournament being played at the Hermitage Country Club.
Gold was tied for ninth after Monday's 36 holes with a 141 total. Gold, the medalist at last weekend's Adams Cup of Newport, led Maryland's quintet heading into Tuesday's final round.
Kay, a freshman, opened with a 73 but had one of only 10 scorecards in the 60s during Monday's second round to move up 18 spots into a tie for 15th overall. Also for Maryland, Tom Hanna III was tied for 56th at 149, Donnie Shin was tied for 73rd at 153 and Brendan Tracy was in 78th at 155.
As a team, Maryland finished the day in 11th place, shooting team rounds of 292 and 291 for a 583 total. The Terrapins were just four shots out of the top 10 in a stellar field.
Wisconsin, which posted the best round of the day with a 278 in the second round, was tied with Penn State atop the team standings after the opening day with 562 totals. Tennessee-Chattanooga was in third at 566.
Individually, Kevin Foley of Penn State sat atop the leaderboard with an 11-under-par total of 133, shooting 65 and 68 on Monday. He led by two shots over Kevin O'Connell of North Carolina, who was at 135, while Jonathan Hodge of Tennessee-Chattanooga was third at 138.
The final round will take place on Tuesday morning.
