TALLAHASSEE, Fla. - The University of Maryland women's soccer team held the nation's highest scoring team below its season average by two goals, but 15th-ranked Florida State handed the Terps a 2-0 defeat at the Seminole Soccer Complex Thursday evening.

The loss drops the Terps' record to 5-5-2 on the season, 0-4-0 in the ACC. The Seminoles improve to 8-3-2 overall, 3-1-1 in the conference.

"Tonight was not our best effort - anyone who saw our game would attest to that," said Maryland coach Brian Pensky. "The signature of this program is how hard we work for one another; and tonight we lacked that quality. We have outstanding players and people in this program and we will all bounce back Sunday vs. Miami."

The Seminoles were able to put their first score on the board in the 36th minute of play. FSU's Katrina Schmidt sent a pass into the Maryland 18-yard box where Sanna Talonen was able to one-time the ball from 10 yards out into the Terrapin net for the goal.

The Terps nearly tied the match less than five minutes later when sophomore defender Mary Casey got on the end of a brilliant corner kick by junior forward Kaila Sciascia with a solid header. Seminole goalkeeper Erin McNulty was caught out of position, but a Florida State defender was there to stop the ball from going into the net.

Florida State picked up the insurance goal in the 56th minute off of a direct free kick by Becky Edwards from 45 yards out into the upper left corner of the Maryland goal.

Terrapin freshman goalkeeper Yewande Balogun made five saves in the match and helped the Terrapin defense hold NCAA scoring leader Mami Yamaguchi without a point for just the second time in Florida State's 13 matches this season.

Maryland concludes its two-match road trip in the Sunshine State on Sunday in Coral Gables, Fla., with a 1 p.m. match at Miami.
