Senior outside hitter Mary Beth Brown (Vienna, Va.) notched a team-high 13 kills on a season-high .458 hitting percentage and the Maryland volleyball team stayed perfect at home this season, knocking off the visiting Miami Hurricanes, 3-1 (30-16, 30-27, 22-30, 30-25), Saturday night at the Comcast Center Pavilion.
With the victory, the Terrapins improved to 12-6 and 4-5 in the Atlantic Coast Conference this season. The Hurricanes fell to 8-10 and 2-7 in the ACC.
The Terps put game one away early, scoring six consecutive points to improve their lead from 7-5 to 13-5. The Terps cruised from there, never leading by less than seven the rest of the game.
After leading by as many as eight in the second game, Miami roared back to take several late leads, including a 25-23 lead before the Terps finished on a 7-2 run, culminating in a kill by Brown.
The Hurricanes grabbed a quick 5-1 lead in the third game and never trailed in their only win of the match.
Early in game four, it appeared the match might be headed for a fifth game tiebreaker as Miami led 9-4, 13-8 and 15-10. However, the Terps rallied with an 8-3 run to tie things up at 18 apiece. Three straight points put Maryland up 21-18 and it never looked back, out-scoring Miami 9-7 en route to the victory.
Brown was joined in double figure kills by senior Beth Gillming (Cincinnati, Ohio) and Jade Brown (Atlanta, Ga.) who each had 12. Gillming added 11 digs, two blocks and a service ace. The ace gave Gillming 105 in her career, putting her into fifth place all-time at Maryland. Ironically, Gillming's ace moved her ahead of Miami head coach Nicole Lantagne Welch, who was a standout setter at Maryland from 1990-1993.
Sophomore middle blocker Meredith Doyle (McLean, Va.) recorded 12 blocks for the second straight night to lead all players and also added five kills.
The weekend marked the return of junior setter Tedi Doucet (Austin, Texas) to the lineup, and Doucet played well, recording 16 assists and three kills. Sophomore Hayley Hanson (Huntington Beach, Calif.) led the Terps in assists with 21.
Freshman middle hitter Brittney Grove (Glen Allen, Va.) played well in her second start of the weekend, posting six kills and five blocks.
The Terps have a short layoff before their next game. Maryland will try to get to .500 in the ACC at 5 p.m. Tuesday when the Boston College Eagles visit Comcast Pavilion. The Eagles handed the Terps a tough loss earlier this season when they came back from an 0-2 deficit to knock off Maryland in five games in Chestnut Hill, Mass.
