COLLEGE PARK, Md. - For the first time in her career, senior Janneke van Leeuwen was named the ACC's Field Hockey Player of the Week, the league announced Tuesday. It is the fourth time this season, including the second week in a row, a Terrapin has been awarded the recognition. Van Leeuwen is also the second Terp to garner the award.
Janneke van Leeuwen (Hilversum, Netherlands) led Maryland to two victories last week, racking up four goals and three assists for 11 points, as the Terrapins remained perfect, sporting a 16-0 record.
In the home contest versus No. 10 Old Dominion on Oct. 12, van Leeuwen assisted on the game-tying goal and then added a score of her own to help the Terps to the 4-1 win. In the 7-0 route of Delaware on Sunday, a team that has been in and out of the top 20 rankings all season, she had a hand in all five of Maryland's second-half goals, recording her first-career hat trick and dishing out two assists.
Van Leeuwen is second on the team with 11 goals and 10 assists. A two-time National Field Hockey Coaches Association Mid-Atlantic All-Region selection, she has collected 49 career assists to tie for fourth all-time in the Maryland record books.
The second-ranked Terps prepare for its biggest test of the season when it travels to No. 1 North Carolina, who is also undefeated with a 16-0 record. Both teams sit atop the ACC standings a 4-0, as well. The winner claims the regular-season conference title and the top seed in the ACC Tournament. The game can be watched on ACC Select at www.accselect.com and can be heard on the University of Maryland's WMUC Sports at www.wmucsports.com.
