Postgame Notes
Young Terps Step Up:
Maryland inserted a pair of true freshman into the offensive starting line-up due to injuries.
Haroon Brown, a native of Hampton, Va., started at fullback for the Terps, and
Bruce Campbell got the nod at left tackle in place of
Scott Burley.
Cory Jackson, the regular starter at fullback, missed Saturday's game after he broke his hand last week against Virginia.
Offensive Line Injuries:
The injury to Burley meant the Terps have lost three starters along the offensive line in as many games. Guards Andrew Crummey and Jamie Thomas suffered broken legs against Georgia Tech and Virginia respectfully, and Burley suffered an injury in practice leading up to the Clemson game. Campbell stepped in for Burley, while veteran reserves Phil Costa and Jack Griffin filled in at the guard positions.
Henderson Leads the ACC:
Since sitting out the Georgia Tech game due to injury, Maryland's Erin Henderson has been on a tear posting 33 stops in his last two games. The linebacker had a career-high 18 tackles against Virginia, and made another 15 stops in the loss to Clemson. On a fake punt in the third quarter of Saturday's game, Henderson recorded his first career carry, a 12 yard gain which picked up a first down. He leads the ACC in tackles with 12.3 per game, which also ties him for third in the country. The junior has led the team in stops each game he has played this season. Henderson was a preseason All-American and was recently named a Butkus Award semifinalist. He is also on the watch lists for the Nagurski Trophy and Bednarik Award.
Philistin not far behind:
Middle linebacker Dave Philistin has stepped up his play with four consecutive games with double-digit tackles, including 12 against Clemson. He posted 21 tackles in the win over Georgia Tech, the most by a Maryland player since 1998. Prior to Saturday's action, he ranked sixth in the ACC and tied for 45th in the nation with 9.43 tackles per game.
Rushing scores: Running backs
Keon Lattimore and Lance Ball have become quite familiar with the end zone this season. The seniors have scored a combined 19 touchdowns on the year. Lattimore has 10 touchdowns on the season, which ties him for the 12th best single-season output. Ball is tied for 15th on the single-season list with nine scores on the ground.
Only two pairs of Maryland backs have ever rushed for more combined touchdowns in a single season. Chris Downs (13) and Josh Allen (8) totaled 21 in 2002, and Bruce Berry and Marc Riley had 10 each for the Terps in 2001.
Veteran Rushers:
With 53 yards on the ground against Clemson, Lance Ball moved up two spots on the Maryland career rushing chart, passing Willie Joyner (1980-83) and Alvin Blount (1983-86). He now ranks seventh with 2,191 yards for his career. He is within 75 yards of Louis Carter (1972-74), who is sixth with 2,266.
Keon Lattimore ran for 51 yards on the day which moved him up two spots to 15th on the career rushing list with 1,619 yards. He passed Alvin Maddox (1975-78) and Bren Lowery (1986-89). Lattimore needs 37 yards to catch Art Seymore (1970-72) who has 1,656 in 14th place.
Moore steps up:
Defensive Tackle Dre Moore stepped up with another big game, forcing a fumble of Clemson QB Cullen Harper in the first half and notching seven tackles. Last week against Virginia, he matched his season high in the first half with two sacks for a loss of 11 yards. Moore also had a pair of sacks against Villanova in the season opener.
Shot out of a Cannon:
Freshman wideout Adrian Cannon had not seen game action since the season-opener against Villanova, but had a career day in Saturday's game. Cannon caught two balls for 60 yards, including one for 44, Maryland's longest play of the day.
Williams matches career-high:
Wide receiver Isaiah Williams matched a career high with five catches for 47 yards. He has had five catches in a game once before - in last season's game against Clemson. He had 66 yards receiving in that game.
Starting streaks continue:
Several Terps extended starting streaks in the game. Safety Christian Varner has started a team-high 30 straight games and 31 of the past 32 games. Linebacker Trey Covington has started 29 of the past 30 games. Guard Andrew Crummey has started a team-high 34 games overall, but has been out of the lineup since suffering a broken leg in the win over Georgia Tech.
Today's Attendance:
The University of Maryland welcomed 50, 948 fans to Chevy Chase Bank Field at Byrd Stadium for Saturday's game.
