Senior outside hitter Jade Brown (Atlanta, Ga.) led Maryland with 17 kills while senior Beth Gillming (Cincinnati, Ohio) and sophomore Meredith Doyle (McLean, Va.) both notched 14 kills in a Sunday afternoon volleyball match at Comcast Center Pavilion, won by Duke, 3-1.
The Blue Devils (18-4, 13-1) won by scores of 30-25, 30-27, 25-30, 30-28.
The Terps (14-9, 6-8) were competitive in all four games, making the 14th-ranked Blue Devils fight for every point.
The Terps led 22-21 in the late stages of game one, but the Blue Devils finished on a 9-3 run for the win. The Terps led 19-14 in game two. Duke reclaimed the lead with a 7-1 run of its own and finished with a 9-7 run to hold on heading to intermission.
Maryland came out focused to start the third game, scoring the game's first three points. The Terps stretched their lead to margins of 10-5 and 16-8. Duke eventually drew within two points at 20-18, but Maryland kept its composure to earn the win and send the match to a fourth game.
The Terps fired out to a 3-0 point lead in the fourth game as well, and played well throughout. The game went back and forth throughout much of the rest of the game before Maryland rattled off four consecutive points to take a 19-15 lead. Maryland held late leads of 27-25 and 28-27. Unfortunately for the Terps, the Blue Devils scored the game's final three points to take the game and the match.
Brown was efficient attacking for the Terps, recording her 17 kills on .455 hitting. Doyle was even more so, hitting .522 for the match. Sophomore Katie Usher (Vienna, Va.) led Maryland with nine blocks. Sophomore Hayley Hanson (Huntington Beach, Calif.) led the Terps in assists, notching 32, while junior Tedi Doucet (Austin, Texas) had 24. Junior libero Maggie Schmelzle (Cincinnati, Ohio) led Maryland in digs with 20 and Gillming recorded 15 herself.
Duke's Carrie DeMange led all players with 22 kills. Preseason ACC Player of the Year Ali Hausfeld had 55 assists.
The game will be broadcast on CSTV Tuesday evening at 8 p.m.
The Terps hit the road next weekend with a pair of Tobacco Road matchups. Maryland plays at NC State Friday evening and plays at North Carolina Sunday afternoon.
