BLACKSBURG, Va. - Maryland senior Jade Brown (Atlanta, Ga.) led all players with 20 kills and moved into sixth place on the school's all-time kill list with 1,160, but a late Terps rally came up just short in a 3-1 (26-30, 27-30, 30-23, 27-30) loss at Virginia Tech Friday night.

The Terps (10-5, 2-4) went toe-to-toe with the Hokies (8-8, 2-4) throughout most of the first two games, before narrowly losing. However, three Brown kills spearheaded a 9-2 Terps run to open game three and the Hokies never got closer than three the rest of the way as Maryland finished off a seven-point win.

In game four, it was the Hokies who started quickly, grabbing an early 5-1 lead. The Terps cut the lead two at 11-9, but the Hokies appeared to be on their way to victory when they scored six of the next seven points en route to taking a 17-10 lead. With Virginia Tech leading 19-12, Maryland stormed back with a 10-3 run to tie things up at 22. The Terps also drew even at 23-23, 25-25 and 27-27, but could never take the lead. Tech scored the match's final three points to earn the win.

Junior Maggie Schmelzle (Cincinnati, Ohio) posted double digits in kills with 10 and also paced the Terps with 26 digs. ACC Player of the Week Beth Gillming (Cincinnati, Ohio) registered eight kills and 16 digs.

Freshman middle hitter Brittney Grove (Glen Allen, Va.) had a breakout game for Maryland, posting a season-high eight kills on .500 hitting.

Grove, junior Mary Beth Brown (Vienna, Va.) and sophomore Kathleen Wilson (Lake Orion, Mich.) all notched six blocks for the Terps.

Freshman setter Rachel Profit (Washington, D.C.) led the Terps with 27 assists while sophomore Hayley Hanson (Huntington Beach, Calif.) followed closely behind with 25.

Taylor Parrish led the Hokies with 19 kills.

Maryland is back in action tomorrow evening against the Virginia Cavaliers in Charlottesville, Va. The match is set to begin at 5 p.m.
