GREENSBORO, N.C. - A pair of Maryland football players earned ACC Player of the Week honors for their performances in the Terrapins' 42-35 upset win over No. 8 Boston College, the league announced Monday.
Sophomore quarterback Chris Turner took home offensive back of the week honors for the second time this season, while left tackle Scott Burley was voted the offensive lineman of the week.
Turner had a huge night, completing 21 of 27 passes for a career-high 337 yards and three touchdowns in just his fifth career start. His 77.8 completion percentage was the eighth highest single-game mark in school history.
He got the offense in gear right from the start, leading the Terps to a touchdown on the opening drive of the game and scores in seven of their first eight possessions. His 219.29 efficiency rating was the sixth highest single-game mark in the ACC this season.
Burley entered Saturday's game hobbled on two bad ankles, but the junior played for all but a handful of snaps and was instrumental in the Terps' upset of the Eagles. Behind Burley's wide frame, the Terps posted a season-high 472 yards of total offense, and scored 42 points -- the most by a Maryland team since 2005. Thanks in part to Burley's blocking up front, running back Lance Ball ran for 109 yards against the nation's top run defense.
Turner was at his best on third down. He was a perfect 10-for-10 for 83 yards, helping the Terps gain eight first downs. He also challenged the BC defense deep, completing four passes of more than 40 yards to four different receivers.
Clemson defensive end Phillip Merling took league defensive lineman of the week honors. North Carolina outside linebacker Durell Mapp, who posted a career-high with 23 tackles against NC State, was chosen as the conference's top defensive back for the week for the third time this season.
Other honorees this week were Clemson place-kicker Mark Buchholz and Virginia Tech quarterback Tyrod Taylor. Buchholz was named specialist of the week, while Taylor, who led the Hokies to a win over Florida State, landed his second rookie of the week award this season.
Senior Dre Moore was nominated for the defensive lineman award and redshirt freshman Emani Lee-Odai for top rookie honors.
