COLLEGE PARK, Md. -
Freshman outside hitter Michelle Kenning (Cincinnati, Ohio) matched personal season highs with 14 kills and 16 digs against the Virginia Cavaliers on Friday evening, but the Maryland Terrapins dropped a four-game match (27-30, 30-14, 24-30, 25-30) at Comcast Pavilion.
The Terps (16-12, 8-11) led 24-22 in the first game, but the Cavaliers (17-11, 12-7) scored eight of the next 11 points to grab the opening win.
Maryland dominated the second game, opening up a 3-3 tie with a 13-0 run to all but put the game away and even the match at one game apiece.
Things looked good for the Terps in the third game when a kill by Jade Brown (Atlanta, Ga.) put Maryland up 22-17. However, Virginia answered with six unanswered points as Maryland struggled against the serve of Virginia's Melissa Caldwell. The Terps evened the match at 24, but the Cavaliers embarked on another 6-0 run, this time behind the serve of Tara Hester, to take a 2-1 lead in the match.
Tied at 14 in the crucial fourth game, a third six-point spurt put Virginia in the driver's seat, 20-14, and it never led by less than four the rest of the way.
Brown led the Terps with 17 kills and added four blocks. Senior Beth Gillming (Cincinnati, Ohio) also reached double-digit kills with 11. Gillming had 12 digs, as well. Freshman Brittney Grove (Glen Allen, Va.) led Maryland with six blocks and had four kills. Junior Maggie Schmelzle (Cincinnati, Ohio) led all players with 26 digs. Sophomore setter Hayley Hanson (Huntington Beach, Calif.) led Maryland with 29 assists while junior Tedi Doucet (Austin, Texas) recorded 18 in her first match back since recovering from a kidney infection that forced her to miss the previous four matches.
With four games played, Gillming will at least tie Maryland's all-time games played record on Saturday against Virginia Tech. If the match goes four games and Gillming plays in all four, she will set the record.
Virginia's duo of Shannon Davis and Katie Oakes combined for 36 kills, with both notching 18. Kelly Irvin had 57 assists for the Cavaliers.
Maryland will try to get back in the win column Saturday evening against the Virginia Tech Hokies. The match begins at 5 p.m. at Comcast Pavilion.
